Atwood Water Heater

Hi,

Our '59 has a propane Atwood 6 gallon G6A-7 water heater. On the outside lower portion of the tank I see a drain plug with a square end. I suspect this is for the zinc anode. I pulled it, drained the krud from the bottom of the tank, but found only a rusty end on the plug. There should be a zinc here, yes?

Can anyone offer up a part # or place to get this plug?

Steve

No, you should not have a zinc anode in an Atwood water heater.

If the anode is completely gone, there's no telling how long it's been gone, unless you were the one who changed it last time. If it's been gone for a while, then you really need to flush the water heater, and see if the water comes out rusty. If it does, then you might be looking at a corroded heater core, and buying a new heater instead of an anode.

Parts66 carries anodes. So does Camping World. Price is under $20 per rod.

Oh, yeah. Forgot about that. The Atwood G6A7 has an aluminum-clad tank, and no anode.

Camping World sells an anode they say is for Atwoods, but this particular model doesn't need them.

Atwood does not recommend putting an anode in their water heaters. Yes I know camping world sells them for the Atwood. Anodes are used in glass lined steel tanked water heaters. Atwood's have aluminum tanks, so no anode is needed.
edit once again I typed too slow.
