Atwood hot water heater drain plug failure

I have a 2016 flying cloud 30. Over the past 3 months I've had 2 plastic drain plugs fail. Each developed a pin sized hole and water started coming out the hole. Has anyone experienced this? If the water pressure was too high, Why didn't the pressure relief valve work? Anyone know the root cause?

I had he same failure last year in my 2002 Classic. I must have overtightened it in the fall when I was winterizing it! I went to Home Deopt and picked up a new 3/4 inch pipe plug for $0.96 and was back in the game. The only regret is that I didnt pick up a second one for a spare to add to all the 'spare' parts that I drag around North America!
Lets hope that this is the worst failure the we will have to deal with.
