Attwood heater stinks, then dies! Gasp!

I'll make it short. Attwood Mod. G6A-E, with very little use. Water heated fine, but stunk like you would not believe!! Then today, went to trailer and the heater is DEAD. I will try to get it to a technician, since that stuff is way beyond me, but do any of you knowledgeable folks have any theorys about what is going on?
