Hi. I'm Danno. New member to the Airstream Forums.
I have a 1974 Sovereign. Both the grey water and black water outlet valves don't close properly and the valve stems are bent.
Is there a separate valve that can be purchased to attached to the main outlet, so I don't get all WET when I connect the hose?
I just as soon not have to get underneath and replace both valves.
I'm pretty sure those are Thetford valves and must be purchased from an AS dealer as they are a different size and style from other brand trailers. You can clean the groove where the valve slides with a dull bent screwdriver but be careful not to press too hard and gauge the groove or it will leak. Service manuals give the procedure for replacing the valves.
My old thetford valves were leaking and one had a broken ear for the bolts. I simply replaced both valves with valterra as you can get parts for them almost anywhere. When I inserted the sleeve coupling into the blackwater tank I used Form-A-Gasket RTV. It allowed the sleeve to go in easily and made a positive seal.
The whole job did not take over two hours. Clean and rinse your tanks several times and it won't be too messy a job.
