If my memory serves me right, and it may not, this was a system sold in the 60's and 70's that used heat from the vehicle exhaust to dry the sewage and discharge it as more or less a powder. A little hard to imagine how they got the exhaust back there on a trailer.
I would remove it.

Haven't heard of it in years

The system has an evacuation probe installed into the waste tank. the effluent is than pumped forward to the A frame coupler by a pump mounted on the A frame. There are electical and effluent quick connections to couple to the tow vehicle. The effluent is then injected into the exhaust pipe of the tow vehicle effectively vaporizing it. There should also be a probe cleaning valve located at the rear of the coach.
