My lavatory sink drains into the black tank, yes, the BLACK tank!! I'm a little embarrassed for not having realized this until today, but in my defense, it's not in the book, and no one at the factory (or the dealership), bothered to mention this little difference in the 28 ft. floorplan. At first I was a little pi$$ed, but after giving it some thought, I'm beginning to see it as an asset. I'd love for some of you to weigh in!

Well, it will put more liquid into the black tank, not a bad thing on its own. Since the gray tank usually fills faster, you should have a longer time between draining tanks.

I never would have guessed without hearing your confession that you're sinking into a black hole.

How do I know where my sink sinks to too?

Is the positive that the black fills up more slowly and you can go longer before emptying your grey tank? The combination grey/black water holding tanks found in some models is the one thing that I would find hard to live with. My shower often tells me its time to go drain the tank.

Some manufacturers of SOB's have done the same thing. The thinking is that there will be bio fluid from the lavatory sink and therefore it is to be considered black water. That was the explanation given to me by a rep for Thor Industries during a visit to a dealership I once worked for.

Different, but not necessarily a bad thing. I would guess that water in the 'P' trap would keep black tank aromas from reaching the bathroom.

I don't want to know what people are doing in that sink. I wash my hands and face in it.

I'd worry more about the shower. I've heard that some people pee in there.

Now I'm wondering if any other new Airstream floorplans are plumbed this way. I think I like it, but I'm in trouble for telling the wife to brush her teeth in the galley from now on....

Just out of curiosity, How do you know its going in the black tank?

And if it is, why do you not want your wife to brush her teeth in that sink?

By turning off the water supply to the toilet, and creating the familiar opening into the tank with the flush pedal, then allowing water to drain from the sink, you can clearly hear it trickling into the black tank......I realized it today, when, after totally filling the black tank (prior to dumping), I coincidently used the sink, and it wouldn't drain.....until I went outside and dumped the black tank. We'll continue to brush our teeth in the lav......

Now I know why there is such limited floor space behind the toilet floor flange in these 28's: the huge baseboard "channel" is obviously where they ran the sink drain, resulting in limited choices in toilets. (Another lavatory compromise is the loss of storage space in the vanity, relative to the F/B's, due to the wheel well).

I see this as a positive.

1. Taking up less of the gray water tank
2. More liquids to wash the "stuff" out of the black tank.

As a matter of fact I saw an add-on sewer valve the other day that would allow you to put more gray water into the black tank. The valve is added to the end of the existing sewer fitting and kept closed. The original valves for the gray and black are left open. I guess the liquid levels equal themselves out between the two tanks.
