Help: Tank Pan Replacement
We our renovating our Airstream and have decided to replace our grey tank and black water tank (which sat in the rear of the Airstream) with a 50 gallon grey water tank. We are redoing our entire plumbing system and using a compost toilet so removing the black tank will not be an issue.
When we purchased the Airstream, the tank pan was completely rusted and unfortunately we no longer have the pan. We are trying to figure out how to have a new pan constructed to fit our new tank and sit at the bottom of the rear of our Airstream.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about doing this? Who to call? How to make sure a new constructed pan fits?

I would not recommend a 50 gallon gray tank in that location. If you have to pull the trailer with the gray tank full, you will have over 2000 lbs there (8 lbs/gallon), greatly reducing tongue weight and towing stability, and likely bending the frame. The combined volumes of the tanks you removed was like about 30 gallons or less.
Large gray tanks are best located near the axles.

Hi Joe--sorry, our tank is 42 gallons after checking, equating to 336lbs (8lbs/gallon). We can look into different tanks, but still have the issue with the tank's pan.
Thanks for letting us know!

Oops. My math was off just a tad at 2000 lbs.

A talented sheet metal fabricator could make a new belly pan for you. I doubt you’d be able to buy one pre-made.
Alternatively some SOB trailers don’t even have a belly pan. Doing that would mean you won’t have insulation / heating around the tanks and less rock protection but it’s an option.

Thank you! How will it stay put if it does not reach the frame?

Good question
IT has been 9 years since I did that so I am not exactly sure. I can say I reinstalled in the same manner the old blk tank box was removed. I found some of my notes that indicated about 6 screws were put in from the outside bottom of the belly pan into the bottom of the new blk tank box which was resting on the cross members of the frame. Those screws would not have penetrated the sloped styrofoam build up that is put in before the black tank.
