Glue on Thetford to Valterra connection?

Hello everyone!

Quick question, my AS is an '88 so it has the thetford connection at the dump connection. I'm using a thetford to Valterra adapter much like this https://www.etrailer.com/RV-Sewer-Ho...nt=30%20-%2060.

Unfortunately the adapter is a little fiddly and leaks, I'm looking at cutting off the thetford connection and gluing on a valterra connection. I've read that's what others have done. Is this the right piece? https://www.etrailer.com/RV-Sewer-Ho...466V293B3.html

Thanks!!!

Looks like the correct part. I did it on my 1988 trailer. I am happy with it.

Bob,

Yes, that's the adapter I have, but it leaks... My tank valves don't leak (for the time being) so I'm looking for a solid solution until my valves fail and I have to replace them, at that point I'll run new PVC with a valterra connection.

That's what I was hoping for! Thanks!

Do you know if the pipe coming out of the AS ABS or PVC? The new fitting I linked is ABS, I'll probably pick up some primer and universal glue.

Bill,

Awesome, thank you. Do you know if the pipe coming out of the trailer is ABS or PVC? Looking for the right type of glue.

Do like lots of others have done cut thetford off glue on valterra, no more hassles, leaks etc. also if pumping serv. at rallies or boon dock type campgrounds most pumpers will not have thetford connections, sure cured lots of prob. for me when I changed.

Featherbedder,

That's what I plan on doing! I hadn't thought of pump services, good info!

Thanks!

I suspect the 3" drain pipe is ABS. There is no need for high pressure PVC in this application.

David,

Agreed and thanks for the input/looking.

The adapter I linked (and purchased) is ABS. I wanted something with a large/longer flange to go over the original 3" ABS pipe for strength (more surface area).

I'll update the thread with install info...

With a 88 no guarantee it's still original, easy to tell BLACK=ABS, WHITE=PVC.

I added a third valve when I changed mine, nice insurance when one starts leaking.

Wazbro,

It's black, so I'm going into this assuming it's ABS.

MarineTex if you it really want a permanent fix.

I keep some in the AS tool kit.

This leak was repaired with MT in 2007.
The fitting was cross threaded and broke at 3am, that's when I started turning off the pump at night or when no-ones around.

Oof, that's some strong stuff there. The oatey glue for abs will work fine since the pipe is not pressurized. Plus with the weather we're currently experience in Georgia I can't maintain the 55 degree minimum requirement MarineTex has...

I also keep a bunch of pex fittings on hand!

Edit: I now see you repaired that threaded fitting with the MT. That's some bravery right there and proof of the strength of the MT. I would have replaced the fitting!
