Fresh water tank cleanout bung won't seal

I did some patch work on my fresh water holding tank pan the other day and made the mistake of pulling the drain bung on the tank. I have not been able to get it to seal. Teflon tape is not doing the trick so I got some of that white paste crap and put on there and it won't seal either. I put a hose clamp around the flange to tighten it up and that slowed the leak down but it won't stop. Now I have to clean all that gunk off there and try something like RTV. The problem is the tank is made of polyethylene and that stuff is hard to bond to. As a last resort, I guess I am going to have to machine a custom made plug with a flange on it for an O-ring and try to seal it from the bottom.

Any ideas out there folks?

I sealed one on my 87 with plumbers putty. Just kneed the putty up till soft then apply to the threads and tighten it up.

I finally got it to seal with extra thick Teflon tape (pink stuff) and a hose clamp around the outside of the flange. I think it was cross threaded at some point. Needless to say, I am not going to be messing with it again.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem.

I used plumbers tape also and now only a very small drip that eventually stopped. Just wrapped tape a few times to 'thicken' around threading.
