Changing from Thetford to Valterra.

Getting fed up with using Thetford to Valterra adapters that often seem to break or leak!

https://www.amazon.ca/Valterra-T1029.../dp/B0006MRRWG

Anyone know If I can just cut off the existing Thetford fitting and glue
the
termination adapter" shown above onto the trailer pipe and be done once and for all with Thetford?

I think it would work better and as well would be more convenient also as everyone including Wally World sells Valterra stuff but Thetford is hard to find.

Not sure of the pipe size on the trailer - and it is not at my house to verify, but I'm guessing it is the same size and from memory the pipe is black same as the fitting shown above and so should be ABS.

Anyone made this change? should be very simple assuming the pipe fits!

Thanks ........ Brian

Hi Brian,
I just did the same thing last October. It is a 3 inch abs pipe on the trailer.
Now there is much more choice of slinky brands that fit the new fitting.
PS: still using the wheels I bought from you.

Recently did ours.
Best $1.69 I ever spent.
Those adapters fail at the worse possible time!

Hello Al, great to hear from you and that the Alcoa wheels worked out well!

A good deal for both of us! Ive had a few years on the Michelin LT's now and the have performed very well - show almost no signs of wear.

Thinking now as we get up in years of moving from the Arstream to a
new Class B - not an Interstate though as it is a tad too big for our drive due to the city sidewalk that crosses the drive!

I think the smaller RV could extend our RV'ing years somewhat compared to the larger trailer and truck that we have - although we have been very happy with it.

As well, the "B" will likely get a lot more use, being parked at our house, and it will get us into many spots we cannot access at present.

Making the move will depend on what I can get as a fair price for our truck and trailer either on a trade-in or private sale!

Thanks for the feedback on the Valterra termination connector - I'll order me one !

Brian

Thanks Atomic! Will do it for sure - I have indeed had a couple of those things break at inconvenient times!

I'm in Quartzsite for the winter.
There is a place selling those valterra rings for less than $2.
Can you find one locally?
I can get you one if you can't.

Best thing I did for waste was change. Very simple hack saw off old glue on new ring. I also use longer hoses with valtera ring w/cap that I can close off other out lets in my dust collection in wood shop. I used galv. pipe w/several take offs, so no static build up that can explode in dust systems.

I too had 'thought' about changing for some of the reasons Brian mentioned like trying to find a Thetford hose adapter in Yellowknife, NWT! However, I have not changed as my experience on the sanitation committee at the International rallies showed the Valtera fittings we use broke very often whereas the Thetford ones almost never did. Now I just ensure I have one or two spare Thetfords.

Thanks again Atomic, Amazon have them and it looks as though Camping World stores have them - albeit at their inflated prices - but still only 5$ !

We are leaving soon for Topsail Hill State Park near Destin Fla. - will probably pick one up along the way and install it when we get there - which reminds me I'd better back something to cut the old one off! Hope I don'r scre up or will will have fun and games dumping the tanks!

Uh-oh, now you've got me worried Don!

I always thought that the Valtera would in fact be better by design as I think it uses four "Ears" or whatever you call them, to make the connection whereas the
Thetford has just two.

I did in fact succeed in breaking a Thetford adapter when I had a third (Vatera) slide valve attached to it at the outlet - I have temporarily removed the third slide valve bit will likely re-install it if I switch everything to Valatera.

The main reason i like the slide valve is that I find often when I dump when leaving one campsite then remove the drain cap at the next campsite a few cups of "unpleasant-ness" sometimes pour out! The third slide valve prevents this - I don't open it until my 3" hose is re-connected!

Are you still going to McAllen (I think it was?!) in winters?

Cheers .......... Brian.

I had Valterra on my Safari 25. When I bought my Classic 30 I discovered it had Thetford. The dealer didn't have the adapter after searching for one for about an hour.

We left, and I bought a Valterra fitting and a dremel tool at a Home Depot in Kentucky on the way home. I cut off the Thetford and glued on the Valterra in their parking lot, in the dark, in 30 degrees and spitting rain.

I don't know what the black pipe is but it is HARD! I first bought one of those cable saws because of the limited access to the pipe. It didn't begin to cut the pipe. I went back in and got the dremel. Not a great, straight cut but it has stayed on for two years. I'd do it again in a heartbeat but hopefully in Florida, in the daytime, with an oscillating multi-tool saw.

Haha - good tip, I'm packing my Dremel oscillating tool ! The trailer is not at the house so I can't remember if there is enough clearance to easily cut all arounf - maybe I'll take the reguluar little dremel too with cut off wheels as well. I imagine that the black pipe must be ABS.

Brian.

Brian.
With the Dremel and cut-off wheel perhaps you can cut outwards from inside the pipe if there isn't room around the outside.

to the OP:

Why do you use adapters? Are you using a hose that is made for Valterra? Why not just put a Thetford fitting on the end of your hose? Our hose has a Thetford fitting and we've been using it for nearly 15 years - sometimes traveling as much as 6 months of the year so it does see regular use.

I guess I'm missing something but it seems like adding a Thetford fitting to your hose would also solve the problem.

Is thetford fitting part that goes into hose a little larger in dia. that valtera? I always had trouble inserting, then converting valtera no prob. another thing when going to nascar and camping, most camp grounds supply pump out serv. and other sporting events we attend, same thing. These pump out serv. rarely have thetford adapters, so have to dump in bucket then use pumper and they are not thrilled to do this way & some refuse to pump out. Thetford hose ends little hard to find, valtera every where. As far as closeness to saw off thetford from pipe there is a close clearance one handed hack saw very small w/blade & very cheap.
