Black Tank Treatment

We currently use happy camper. No TP down into the tank. We still have our sensor reading 100% when it’s empty. Have tried filling the tank with 50# of ice on our last relocation but it didn’t help so we did it again one more time for a short drive but results remain the same.

Was thinking that there may a super strong additive that we can add that takes out the organic build up. What’s my next step or does anyone have any recommendations?

If you have a pressure washer and it's just dirty tank I would give this a try

Put TP in the tank, it wipes it down.

So I make sure and flush the tank very well when I dump. The key is after most is dumped, to fill the tank up with water (about 80%) using the flusher. Then dump again. I do this at least 3 times, then let it run for awhile until I see clear water coming through. I use a clear connector so I can observe it.

Frankly most tank treatments work just fine. But if you are going to dump often the tank treatment is kind of a waste of money. I just really don’t drive with waste in the tank.

Don't be in too much of a rush to dump. Let it fill for at least 4-5 days, using plenty of water, then drive to the next campsite or dump station, then dump.

The motion from driving will churn up the contents, making it a slurry, which will dump much better and cleaner.

Our personal record for holding (while parked) is 9 days. While traveling, we always go at least 5 days.

The proof will be evident in that clear dump thing.

BTW...the gauges are notoriously inaccurate. Trust your instincts.

By the way, I typically pour about 5 gallons of water into the black tank through the toilet before we use it and while we are traveling. That helps it from getting sludgy.

Since it's reading 100% I'd suspecect a bad sensor or wiring or possibly the Analog to digital circuit on the processor board and not a tank issue.

First disconnect the input wires and verify it goes to zero. Then connect it and read the voltage and current on the input. I can help you decipher the results.

Thanks for all of the responses. I dumped a bunch of dawn soap down there today.

We full time and travel often. Usually dump once every week or two for black tank. I use extra water but can certainly start the tank off with more.

What I read, besides pressure washing and gel method we may have a sensor issue? I’ll look into the disconnecting of it. We are in an 18 classic and I am not sure where sensors are but will start looking into it.

Hopefully the dawn soap helps break up some gunk....

We had to replace our black tank last year due to a crack that leaked at about ¼ full. A very expensive proposition BTW. The dealer said that they recalibrated the sensor at the time. Don't know what's involved, how difficult, or if it was hokum, but you might ask your dealer or JC. Might be a simple adjustment?
