Seriously? They didn't pick this up at the factory?

Designed that way. Normal on some models. Adds liquid to black tank for better dumping.

Gray tank generally fills way before black tank so this is a plus.

This is perfectly normal on some Airstream models but not on others. There are pros and cons to either way this is done. I wouldn't give it another thought.

If you look at your manual there are plumbing diagrams for different models. Some models the sink drains into black tank - I know our 25FB Flying Cloud bathroom sink also drains into black tank. I don't mind because our gray tank fills so much faster than black it cuts down on having to dump as often.

We have a 30' 2014 FC it's designed that way. easy to add water to the black water tank. Also conserves gray water tank when you don't have sewer hook up. We think it's a plus.
YMMV

I'm renovating my 73, and I could drain the lav sink into the black tank very easily; in fact, the path to the grey tank inlet will pass right by the black tank vent, so it would no problem to just drain it into the black tank.
Should I?

Hey Chuck - it probably depends on how you camp but I'd say you it's a good idea.

We find that we use a lot more gray than black. We sometime do "tank management" by washing dishes over a tub we dump in to the black tank or having a bucket in the shower that catches much of the shower water so we can dump that in the black too. My unit's sink goes straight to gray but I'd welcome a diversion to black (though the bathroom sink isn't a big source of water usage in the first place...).

It would be great to have a feature where you could select whether sinks or shower could go to gray or black as needed but that's probably asking a lot (and not without its own set of worries &#128563.
