1961 Globetrotter black tank question.

Greeting, We just purchased a 1961 19' Globetrotter. The prior owner told us the unit only had a black tank and that she used a portable tank for the gray water. When I stared to go over the trailer in detail, I found that the gray water drains out through the black water value. This allows black water to back flow into the gray lines. Not a smart or healthy design. You also have to lay on the ground to hook up the drain hose and pull the enclosed value up in the pan. Also not a great position at a dump station. Has anyone changed out this setup? Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks in advance in Maryland.

Depends on what your goals are. Going to add a GW tank or just replumb the drain lines to a more convenient location/hose connection?

I would lean towards adding a GW tank and replumb drain lines to make connection more accessible. Not the easiest solution, but having more capacity is never a bad thing. Hopefully by the time you would complete this having a mobile bathroom and lunchroom won't be as important as it is now.

I assume your trailer is a rear bath. I couldn't find information on a 61 Globetrotter, but did find info on a 62 model year Globetrotter.

That said, I had a 66 Trade Wind 24' with a rear bath, the worlds goofiest toilet, and a awful black tank. Like you described, my trailer had a single valve with gray water plumbed ahead of the valve.

I rebuilt the bath in that trailer to more modern configuration. I threw away the old stuff, purchase two new 27 gallon tanks, one for grey and one for black water. I changed the drain manifold and dump valves to the street side of the trailer which is more conventional.

The upgrade you have mentioned is certainly possible given enough time and dollars. I was very happy with the upgrades I made. Here are some photos.

Composting Toilet? We installed one in our 1959 Tradewind as I didn't want to deal with a black tank and it's limitations as far as capacity. So we went with the Airhead and it has worked well, just make sure you put the fan in correctly so that it blows out of the AS instead of into, not an experience you want. Thankfully it was just the first couple days of use.

We also put in updated plumbing (no more cast iron) and two 16gl grey tanks within the frame and I'll post some pictures of that. We also put in a 31gl fresh water tank under the gaucho. Of course we did a ground up restoration/update which made it a little simpler.

My 62 had Black tank only. But, I got it gutted and so chose to add a good size grey tank and a Nature's Head composting toilet.

My 1970 only had the 5 gal black when I got it. I replaced the black as it had a old repaired crack on top and added 2 grey tanks between the floor joists behind the axle. It has worked great.... the small black for us has never been an issue with volume when we boondock ....its always fresh and grey.

My replacement valve just arrived and I hope to get it installed this weekend. I did add a gray valve to the setup to mainly keep water from building up behind the cap and dumping out before I could hook up a hose (embarrassing at a nice campground)
