Water pump / jack hammer

I assume this is the original water pump. When I turn it on it sounds like a mini jack hammer but seems to operate just fine, is this a normal sound? The filter to the right appears original as well, should both these items be replaced...cleaned or what?

Good question, yes it is normal, have you pumped water thru it? Check to ensure it is mounted solid, this reduces the vibrating noise.

It is a PAr pump, and yes, it is supposed to thump when running. From the look of your filter, you should clean it out. If it leaks, it is easily repaired, if you can find the parts.

If you don't have an accumulator tank in the circuit, it would be a good idea to install one immediately downstream of the pump. The tank which is divided by a diaphragm into two compartments, one for water and one for compressed air, will help in two ways: it will reduce the hammer by absorbing some of the pulse that the water lines can't, and, which is even better, it cuts the duty cycle of the pump significantly. They are cheap and readily available at RV and marine suppliers. Makes a world of difference.

This is the original pump that came with the unit. It has been making noise and supplying water all those years. As long as you can put up with the noise. (Which will only happen when you are drawing water.) I would not change it. Do not mount it solid to the floor. That will only amplify the sound. They are usually mounted with rubber feet or a fairly thick rubber pad under them. It also helps to have a 6 inch flexible braided Flexible hose before and after the pump so the pump does not vibrate the rest of the rigid copper piping. If this pump finally gives out then you can replace it with a quieter one. Lots of options at your local RV dealer or online.

Check the output diaphrams. If they leak the air-side cavity will fill with water and then they provide no pulse dampening. They hammer like heck! Mine had a tale-tail ultra slow drip and the tendency for the pump to cycle from time to time. It also lost it's prime after sitting for a while. I fixed the diaphram and now it's reasonably quiet

Make sure you bleed the air from all the water lines. Go to each sink and operate the hot and cold untill you have a steady stream of water. Don't forget the shower and the toilet. Air in the lines will cause the pump to work harder (compressing the air). After you do that, it will still make a bunch of noise, but maybe not as much.
