We need a thread on all the crazy thing people have dropped into various tanks. The list would quite long. My favorite item is a person (not me) that dropped their hearing aid into the toilet, panicked, and flushed it to the black tank. Try that with your $20,000 Cochlear Implant Processors. Now that is an expensive mishap.
Sorry for deviating, but the main idea is to not risk that kind of exposure.

Reconsider poking around in the fill hose with a wire.. these are like pool tubing and you can poke a hole in it then MUST fix it

If you're "dead set" on getting it out, You may consider going "fishing" for it by using a scope w/light to find its location then using a flexible grabber claw pick up reacher tool like the one shown here (from Amazon) or something like it..

Two ideas - one for before you get it out and one for after.
First is if you have fairly easy access to your fresh water tank. Our Airstream motorhome came with the plastic tank underneath one of the twin beds. The previous owner must have had some type of issue, because it had a circular hole about 3 or 4 inches across (best guess, haven't looked for years) cut into the top center and he had mounted a two piece plug into the cut hole. That plug wasn't very good, so I matched up a better fit one from a local hardware store. It's never leaked in over 10 years now, and I usually fill it as full as I can get. The nicest part is I remember being able to get in there with a grabber and grab out all those inevitable shavings left over from installation that most everyone has in their tanks. Now it's a simple matter of removing the bed wood cover and removing that plug to remove anything that might ever fall in from filling.
Second, I've always used a black plastic zip-tie on my filler nozzle to keep it secured. As long as it's drawn tight in the first place before you cut off the excess plastic, it will stay tightened up and won't cause issues catching in the hole like a metal pipe clamp will.

I’ve come so close to dropping the tube into our tank on a few occasions. After seeing this string, I knew I must take it a sign to address the same concern.
This was my easy fix. The added benefit is a bit of aeration to the water from the tip of the screw.

Just hoping you used a stainless screw to minimize the chance of getting rust into the tank and eventually filter system.

Food-grade stainless of course.

I personally am not concerned about eating a bit of rust as much as dealing with the clogged inline filter from rust particles over the years. So I could care less about food grade stainless in this application since my filter is a pain to get to.

Camco HWT washer
Must happen a lot. I bought one of these from Amazon and it works great. However, I got a question from the Amazon website from a lady who bought one and the tip jetted into the tank when the valve was turned on. I suggested she get one of those flexible grabbers (three prongs on the end) and fish around for the tube. Don't know if she was successful. I think the wire clothes hanger or my grabber should work.

Just read the string and realized this happened with a "fresh water tank". My experience is with the Camco "water heater tank" flusher. This must happen with any type of tank flushing device.

I just put a new 1-1/2" hose on to my vintage water fill. It is not a direct straight shot to the tank and there is a 90 degree elbow at the top of the tank. There is no way (on mine) that the piece of hose would ever make it into the tank. I would check under the cabinetry to see how the hose is situated. It may be reachable with a telescopic grabber tool.. found on Amazon for $12.00... or... just leave it in there.
