How the heck??!!!

My 28’ Flying Cloud is my home after 20 years of full time RVing, so I’m accustomed to the idiosyncrasies of RV construction and maintenance challenges. Since I’m permanently ensconced, with water, electricity, and sewer connections, I’m delighted! But really, Airstream, the challenges…

After Hurricane Helene, we had silt in our water supply. The “simple” task of rinsing out the strainer seemed to be the logical solution. But after wresting the panel off, the daunting next step of removing the strainer leaves me with questions unanswered in the manual. My questions may not cover all of the steps I should be prepared for, so feel free to add.

1) Shut off water supply? And drain?
2) How to get through the vent obstacles? Cut them and then duct tape?
3) Tools needed?
4) Stupid moves to avoid? Or what can go wrong?
5) Why is this routine maintenance task so inaccessible?

I've watched a few airstream techs over the years....they often use the yank, push, shove, and prop up methods of access.

If a hose termination point is close by I'd look there for a disconnect.

I agree with majorairhead, I access mine by shoving the furnace vent hoses out of the way and trying to wedge them so they stay out of the way, I am more gentle with wiring but the principal is the same. No special tools needed, I do use my phone to take pictures of most things I do with the Airstream so I get things back to how I found them. Good Luck.

Are you running from the fresh water tank or city water?
Just asking since the water pump strainer is not part of the city water part of the system.

The strainer is on the non-pressurized side of the water pump in the fresh water tank system. While a good idea, it's not really necessary to shut off the water supply. The city water system shouldn't be going through the strainer, and the pump pulls from it, not into it.
