There is a check valve built into your fresh water pump that is supposed to prevent this. It is not unknown for the valve to stick or a small piece of debris to cause it to leak.

First aid is to shut off your city water and use your pump and your onboard tank. Sometimes this alone will fix it. Sometimes a new pump may be in order...

Same thing happened to us last summer. We installed an additional check valve between the pump and the tank to prevent recurrence. There are several threads on this topic, so it seems to be a common problem.

Had same issue on our AS's first trip when new in 2018. Running off the pump to run tank down corrected the issue for two years. Last fall it started again intermittently, so I replaced just the check valve in the pump. Check valve part number is listed in the water pump manual.

I removed my water pump a couple of weeks ago, took it apart, and cleaned the valves. All looked fine. Had hoped to find a pine needle or other debris there. Put it all back together and installed an extra check valve as a precaution.

Then tested the pump by pumping antifreeze through the system.

Will have to wait until the next camping trip to see if the overflowing fresh water tank issue is resolved.

You do not have to replace the whole pump. I have installed a repair kit on my pumps twice. Once it was found not necessary. It was a faulty suction connection.
Start with running the pump with city water turned off to try to clear the check valve, then if necessary replace the check valve

Where does the fresh water drain from? From behind the little locked door where the lid screws on to the water inlet?

I kept having this problem, got ready to replace pump after rebuilding it a time or two, then put this in, very easy and haven’t had any issues since.

A quick short-term fix is to shut off the hose feeding the city water [with pump off], and open a faucet until there is no water flow from the faucet.

Close the faucet, and turn the pump on and off quickly a bunch of times [5 or so], until the system reaches full pressure.

This will often clear out any grit from the pump. Hook back up to city water and see if the problem has gone away.

Always use an inline RV water filter in your potable water hose, both for filling the tank, and for supplying city water.

PS -- The search results in Post #3 lead to lots of discussions about this.

Good luck,

Wondering if you tried any of the suggestions here?

Happy trails,
