1987 Excella - Fresh Water Leak - What's behind the petcock

On a trip returning home I stopped for fuel and noticed that there was water pooling under my AS (1987 Excella 32 ft). I took a quick video of it as follows:

After I got home and I crawled under the trailer I was able to pinpoint the leak as coming from the flange of the petcock used to drain the fresh water tank, as shown in the photo.

Before tackling this job, I need to know what to expect when I remove the 2 screws that fasten the petcock to the side of the fresh water tank cover.

1. Does the petcock have a barb which is inserted in a tube and secured with a hose clamp or is it screwed into the tank?

2. What are the two pipes down for? Overflows? Vents?

3. Are there any "gotchas" that I need to be aware of before starting this job?

Add removing the square access pan on the bottom.

Gotchas, crud, spiders and leftover trailer junk.

From valve I bet you’ll find a short length of vinyl tubing it might be crumbs or cracked.

And yes your #1 is accurate.

On my 2002 Classic 30 Slideout there was about 1.5" of tubing from the back of the valve to a barb fitting screwed into the side of the fresh water tank. Luckily there was already an access plate.

Plan A was to build up the complete barb fitting/hose/drain valve assembly, insert it through the existing hole, screw it in to the tank. That didn't work. The barb fitting was bigger than the hole in the side of the tank pan.

Plan B was to install the hose on the barb fitting, put it in from the inside, press the valve barb into the hose, clamp it from the outside, and then screw the barb fitting into the tank. That didn't work either. The clamp on the valve barb wouldn't go through the hole st all angles of rotation needed to screw the barb fitting into the tank.

Plan C was to open up the hole with a sheet metal nibbler. That didn't work because I still couldn't get the valve barb hose clamp through without making the hole bigger than I wanted to.

Plan D (finally, this worked) was to screw the barb fitting into the tank, insert the valve with the clamped hose and the clamp for the barb fitting in from the outside. and tighten the barb fitting clamp. This only worked because I had a 1/4" drive universal joint which was needed to get on the tank barb fitting clamp.

So I now know three things that don't work and one that does. Hope this saves someone some time.
