Zip Dee Support Hook Broke What To Do?

The hook that helps support my Zip Dee awning broke for some reason. Where would I order a replacement and what type of place could fix it? It should be very easy but I'm not the handiest of guys.

Picture attached.

Why don't you just drill out that rivet, then drill another hole the the side and re-attach it to the support rod. This would get you back in the game for now until you could secure a replacement from the Zip Dee folks. You'll need Part#718611 - SATIN CLAW AND BAR ASSEMBLY WITH PIN. I would call ZipDee.. get a couple of those.. It looks like it cracked through the hole where the previous rivet was. When you install the new one, open up the hole a bit ...

Take the arm off the trailer and take it to an Airstream repair facility to replace the claw if you are not handy. Or order a new claw and replace it yourself if you are, it's not difficult.

One of the reasons they can break is the arms stick when sliding to put the awning up. Always keep the arms well lubricated with silicone.

Someone said, on another thread, that if you ask they will give you new storage position posts for the rafter arms. Most apparently break because we don't get the throat of the hook into the smaller diameter area of the post. If it is in the larger diameter position it puts undue strain on the hook and cracks it.

If you are moving, DucTape. Had it happen in Northern Maine. Finished lowering and taped the two arms together. Went on our way for another almost 3,000 miles before I could get it fixed with a new part. Held fine, but could not use the awning.

We had the same thing happen earlier this year. I mentioned it to another AS owner, as I was taping it back together. About an hour later, he came over and mentioned his was cracked too. I have a replacement from Zip Dee, but the tape job is still going strong.

that must be a weak part. When we were going on our walk thru while picking up our 2015, the piece broke just like that when the tech was demonstrating how to operate the awning.

Not free for me either. Somewhere in the $25 range. I guess I should get off my duff and install it. BTW, they sent another storage post.

Zip Dee claw

Contact Zip Dee or order through AS parts store or another RV shop if AS isn't near by, less than $30 including freight

This is a very easy fix. So being handy if not is not so issue.
Breaking claws is a known problem and is directly connected to the placement of the claw on the storage post. Zip Dee will send you replacement posts that are larger and will solve the is placement issue. There is no charge for the posts if you call them at customer service. They will want to know the year of your trailer as 2007 and newer units only need the posts but 2006 and older need the posts and a set of longer bolts
Hope this helps
Cheers
Doug

When setting up the awning, remove the claw from the storage post, then attach it to the roller bar after the awning is unrolled.
When putting the awning away, first detach the "claw" from the roller bar, push it in and set it over the storage pin, then roll the awning back.

I have never broken a "claw".

Zip Dee hook

This is undoubtedly a design flaw, because this cast aluminum part breaks frequently. We had it happen just after we started using the awning, no wind, undo force, or any reason I can put my finger on. Airstream dealers keep a supply handy because it happens so often. Just take the arm (slides out of the sleeve easily) and the broken hook to a dealer and they will put a new one on for free and you're on your way.

Good to know about contacting direct to zip dee. I lost one in arizona over the winter. Contacted one of the usual suppliers and ordered two. These posts confirm poor quality or a design flaw.

You can purchase a stainless steel hook from almost any Marine Store - they've got about fifty different kinds that would work just fine. Last forever, as well. The hook is just insurance and the stainless would look better.
