Zip Dee paint flaking off

I wonder how big a problem there is with the grey paint flaking off of the Zip Dee end caps? I have a 2018 FC 25 and the paint is just falling off of the end cap. I assume its from bad paint prep at the Zip Dee manufacturing facility as I dont see another reason for it (chemicals, heat, etc...)

If someone has repainted (recoated) theirs what product do you recommend? Also, what preperation of the metal do you recommend before repainting?

Thanks!

I have the same issue--would like to hear what others have done, too.

I would file a warranty claim with ZipDee.

That is definitely a manufacturing defect with the powder coating.

Looks like it's a part (HEAD CASTING ASSEMBLY) that can be ordered directly from ZipDee...Zip Dee parts List. They may provide a replacement under warranty...call them 800.338.2378.

Mine has a few dings where the travel wheel doesn't properly align, but nothing like that.
I caution you if you're thinking of replacing it, or removing it, be aware that it's under tremendous spring tension. It's easy to remove, just be prepared and first, unwind the spring, counting the turns. Detach the arm from the trailer and use that as your lever. It's best with a helper, but can be done with a stepladder supporting the roller.

Those parts are die cast and very porous, which makes it difficult for the powder coating to make a good bond due to out gassing.

I wouldn’t bother replacing it with a new part, because it will begin to peel again within a year or so.

Paint would also be a pain with questionable results.

I’d just chip away/strip off the powder coating and leave the cast aluminum exposed.

Mollysdad is correct. I've seen what can happen if the 'loaded' arm gets loose. Not pretty and it can hurt someone. It's not that hard of a job, I've helped a friend do one, just need to know what to expect and be ready. I wouldn't do it by myself, 2 people make it a lot easier.

If memory serves me, usually it's only the rear arm that is in tension, the front one is a simple job if that's the case but just be aware.

It looked oxidized from underneath the paint. As others had stated, it's just the material used and the manufacturing casting method. If it's under warranty, then replace it. Else, sand it smooth, a good primer paint followed by touch-up paint.

I have this same issue. Apparently quite common. I'm thinking there has to be a product that will adhere and be impervious to continued corrosion. Then find an epoxy type paint?

Strength in numbers. So glad we're not alone in the struggle.

Add me to the list - we first noticed around the locking mechanism receivers and then the arms. Based on other wear and tear and failures this is just unsightly at this time, I will wait for a system failure before acting - I am sure if I try to file a warranty claim I will be turned away as a second owner.

The first problem is painting on aluminum. After cleaning the surface well with a wire brush, coat the exposed metal in a Zinc Chromate primer made for aluminum. Then add whatever paint you choose. Epoxy? Lacquer? Finger nail polish? (seriously)
