Zip Dee Awning One Side Sticking

I just got a new Flying Cloud. On one of the roadside awnings (the long one) when we try to pull the awning out one side sticks in. A little pulling on the arm gets it working but my wife wants it to work properly for some reason. I would rather do a simple fix myself rather than spending a day at the dealership having them take a look at it. Also sometimes it works just fine so it might not even act up while it is there.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Dan

More info please.
The spring is in the forward end of the awing and the rear end should just be free wheeling so let us know which end is hung up.

Hi

Enough of the mechanism is out in the road dirt that crud can get here and there. First step would be to cycle it a few times. Next would be to attack it with the hose to spray out any dirt. Strategic use of spray lube might be next, I'd be concerned about staining the awning material though.

Spray silicon is the secret to keeping our ZDs working smoothly.

Use silicon spay ... not DW40 ... DW40 will loosen things up in the short term of course, but in the long run it will only attract more dirt and make the problem worse. We use silicon spray on the awning arms, hinges and locks to keep them moving smoothly.

Also own a 2017 Flying Cloud Bunk that exhibited the same issue; as you pull on the strap the forward arm remained in position until manually extended by a second person. This went on for about a week, then returned to normal operation after silicon spray.

Sticky awning arms

Graphite! It's the only way to fly, but be careful it'll get everywhere if you're not diligent about the amount and just being careful. Are used it on my windows as well on the rubber to keep them from sticking to the window itself/2000 725 foot front bedroom Safari.

You have heard:
WD 40 (don't use it; it is an oil that collects dirt subsequently),
Silicone (not bad, but still an oil and can cause problems with sealants later)
Graphite (good dry lube, particularly for locks, but can be a dirty mess).

Each has supporters, but your best bet (you can find several manufacture's versions on Amazon) is a fluorocarbon (Teflon-style) dry powder spray lubricant. It doesn't stain, and it is dry so it does not attract dirt.

As previously stated, the best (AND ONLY) product to use on the awning arms is silicone spray. You really can't put too much on or do it too often.

Sounds like mine. One side sticks in the wheel latch notch. I just give the rafter arm a push up and pull the awning out.

Thanks for,all the replies!

Amazing forum here! Thank you all for the sage advice. Think I will go with the silicone this time. Graphite is good but I really only use that on locks...too messy. When I got my initial, walk through the mantenance guy said only use 100% silicone spray and nothing else so that is the route I will go. Hope that will fix t. If not, I will post again.

Thanks all.

Relax Awning (automatic)

The Relax (12v automatic) awning on our 2017 International 27FB fails to open intermittently. The issue shows up most commonly when the awning is closed when wet. It then fails to open on its own, requiring me to pull the real arm out when first turning the unit on. Zip Dee Service installed a spacer washer behind the side-wall black rubber bumper; supposedly to provide more force to push the rear arm out. Unfortunately this didn't help. Ive spoken to Zip Dee Service and they tell me there is no other solution. (BTW, I've cleaned and lubricated the arms per manufacturer spec with both of their specified lubricants)

Has anyone else found a solution to this problem?

Hi

Just for the record, we run our awning in and out a lot. I've had one case where it stalled before fully retracting. Running it out and back corrected the issue. That's it as far as issues. No lube used. Nothing done to improve things in any way. We store it wet, store it dry, deploy it wet, deploy it dry with no issues.
