Just like Grand Master's Father, my 1962 Overlander is my favorite trailer.

Our rope and pole was made by Marti's Awnings. She did an awesome job and I cannot praise her more highly. With strong springs on the ropes, it hold tight even in very sharp wind. Yes it takes longer to put up, but it also looks much better than a roll out on this era trailer. When camping, I cannot imagine an extra 4 minutes to be that much of a sacrifice.

We also had her make us window awnings for every window. They snap onto buttons screwed directly into the Mark-12 frames. These window awnings often are used instead of main awning. When closed they offer 100% complete black out. As with the main awning, I cannot praise the craftsmanship, quality, and low price Marti charged more highly.

Frank,

Those window awnings are the nicest I have ever seen. The valence around three sides adds a very nice touch.

Friends of ours made window awnings that attach to the windows. I have attached a photo. As you can see, there is a pocket at the bottom for the window to slip into, and an elastic strap which goes around the window and holds the awning at the top. No metal parts to rust. Throw it in your washer.

This photo was taken in February 2001, the awnings are still in use.

Very simple.

I also made window awnings for our '64 GT...they match the awning, have pockets on the bottom corners and snaps at the top...they work great!

Love 'em!

These all look awesome. I feel like the window awnings really take the look of the rig back to the good old days.

Grand Master, Thank you for the compliment. I wish I could take credit, but the original example was found from a very early rally photo. I had to super enlarge the image, for it was not really in the foreground. Marti was the one that reproduced it almost perfectly. There were also main awnings rolled up and tied to the side. I do not think at todays highway speeds it would hold up long. Unfortunately the photo was lost during a hard drive crash and I have not seen it again.

Awning Update

The new awning set up at Fort Wilderness over April break. It takes us about 10 minutes to set it up. My wife and I slide it into the rail, and then the kids help me with the poles and ropes. Very happy with it.

Could you explain that "bridge" that you have at the bottom of your lines near the stakes? I'm imagine that you use those to lock them without knotting from the looks of it?

Exthemius,
They are small plastic pieces with two holes for the line. They work just like a slip knot, just a fancy way to tighten the lines. Came from vintage trailer w/ awning.
I also bought 8" utility springs at Home Depot that I attached to the top of the lines to give some flex to the awning if some high winds come up.

vintage 1964 awning

Well it's Spring again and time to air out the rope and pole awning for some new adventures. As I was assembling the awning the wife took some photo's, and when I was down loading them I remembered this thread. So I decided to add a few photo's of my old awning with the sides up, and the removable panels off. Screen room/Tent.
Hope every one has a fantastic year out there enjoying those Vintage Awnings

Just wondering, does anybody use a full length window awning streetside? I liike the idea of a single long window awning to shade the entire side of my FC. I have 12' rails on both sides but dont know how i would attach shorter legs to the side of the TT. Pics would be a huge help.

Thanks Seldencove. Your is very cool, I like it a lot. I love your trailer also.
I really like the rope & pole awning look for these older vintage trailers. We were so lucky ours came with the Safari. Still in great shape. Obviously the PO didn't set it up much.
I'm not Knocking the Zip Dee's or others. They are very functional and easier to set up for sure.
Just sayin.

Rumrunner, I have seen short pull out style awning running the whole SS shading windows and skin, done by Zip Dee. Sorry no pics. Couldn't hurt to call Zip Dee with your dimensions.

Thanks Batman, I have seen the zipdees also, but was really wondering about a vintage style. I know I have seen them in a few old pics but nothing recent. I'm pretty sure I can figure out the framing but was really wondering about mounting hardware. Anybody got an idea?

Wow,
makes me want to swap out my Zip Dee and save on weight and add the vintage style. They look really classy and present a very welcoming environment.

We love our Zip Dee and it is always great to see the variety of different ideas.

Does the screened room snap to the sides of the trailer? I have snaps down the sides of my trailer. I assume they were used for this purpose.

Hi matt,
No mine does not snap to the sides. Mine has vertical rope slide channel on the front and rear and the sides of the awning have rope sewn in them and slide in and up from the bottom then metal clips sewn onto the sides clip into metal rings sewn in along the top. The corners zip together and all of the panels zip off. However, there is a skirt that snaps on to the lower skin the length between the side panels and hangs to the ground to encloses the trailer side of the room from the elements.
Does yours have the extra rope slide channels on the sides also?

No, I have the rope slide track along the top for the awning, then snaps every 12" or so down the sides and some along the bottom I think. Probably a very similar end result, just snaps rather than ropes. I am getting ready to buy a new vintage style awning. Maybe add the room later. Not sure how much I would use it though. I suspect it would be nice to have if the weather turned foul and we were staying for more than a couple days.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I made these from the same fabric as the large rope and pole awning on the curb side last year. These have a simple elastic cord on the top and corner straps on the bottom corners. Still working on the matching awnings for the front and rear windows.
