Original awning

Does anyone know who made the awnings for AS in the early 70's? The one on our 1972 Safari doesn't say Zip Dee on the end caps. The frame is in good condition but it needs new canvas. Thanks.

Do you have photographs? Carefree and A/E were two aftermarket brands commonly installed on Airstreams of that era.

No pics yet but the "remains" of the awning that used to be on the back window say Carefree.

Do the end caps on the main awning look like the ones in the photo?

Most dealers installed carefree in70s. Henry Duda started manuf. the Zip=Dee awning in 1966 or 67 but far as I no he sold to indviduals at rallys & else where. I had one of first made when he worked out of his garage, he came out to farm with awning on roof of chrysler imperial and installed it. at The time I think he was pres. of Il. wbbci unit. His awnings were very well built, when I rolled my 30 ft. 3 mos. after awning was installed there was no damage to it period AS rolled compleatly over and back on wheels, but I can not say same for AS as was total loss. my 76 31ft. came with dealer installed carefree that I replaced several yrs.ago with zip=dee. As far as I no awnings were not an option from fact. when I ordered 1966 & 1967 AS as it was not offered as far as a&e awnings I believe they were not manf. until later at least I never heard of them. Maybe Inland Andy will wade in on this as to times & when AS started to offer awnings as options as he is Guru of AS.

Not to disagree with Zepp in any way .

I believe that is actually an old AE Systems awning (which was a Dometic brand) as evidenced by the faded logo in the 3rd photograph.

Canvas/fabric is available for either brand as far as I know, so no worry. I purchased my last fabric from a marine dealer in FL. It came ready to install.

My awning was made by Zip Dee. The canvas was replaced, using Sunbrella fabric.
