Hey Ken,
Your new CFR should come with a detailed set of instructions. I assume that you will be using your old hardware and arms. If so, the first thing to do is get a helper. Then, unfurl your old awning and remove the spring tension.
To do this, you remove the rear arm from the trailer and disassemble it so that only the short piece attached to the end casting is left. Be sure to always hold it securely or it will helicopter and could be dangerous. You can also support the awning with a ladder underneath it. Have your helper stabilize the awning while you do this.
You then unwind it (counter clockwise) until all of the tension is off the spring. At this point, you can remove all of the arms from the CFR. There should be 1 or 2 screws in the awning rail holding the CFR in place. These should be removed. Now roll up the awning cloth by hand up to the rail and slide the entire thing out of the rail.
You are now ready to insert the new CFR. The rest is just the reverse of the removel process. There should be a flair at one end of the rail to ease the insertion of the new CFR. It also helps if you spray a little lube (I use DuPont Teflon Dry Lube) into the awning rail. You can assemble the front arm to the CFR but only add the short section to the rear as you have to re-wind the new spring. IIRC, it is 7 turns (clockwise) PLUS one turn for each foot of the awning.
When totally assembled (don't forget the retaining screws in the rail) the awning should need just a slight push to start the retraction.
Let me know if you need any other info..........................
