Lucy's New Awning

We had decided that we wanted an awning of some type for the rear dinette window on Lucy's back end. After considering our options, we decided to go with a tinted rock guard like the one on Lucy front bedroom end. We have gotten it installed, and we think it is going to work great. Here are some photos. We will give it a complete test on our upcoming Wyoming/New Mexico trip.

I have seen this same setup now on quite a few trailers. I always wondered why they were putting a rock guard on a window that has little need of rock guarding.

Can I ask why you decided on a rock guard VS placing a Zip Dee awning back there? Was the rock guard less expensive than the Zip Dee?

Yes Lew, We're going to be with the 4CU group at the Balloon Fiesta. We're heading out with Lucy right after Labor Day to Wyoming and Montana for Moose watching. We plan to work our way down through Colorado and Rocky Mountain NP, and then on to Albuquerque.

We also looked into the Zip Dee, and the cost was pretty much the same. I believe that the cloth awning was about $50 more than the rock guard.

After due consideration, we decided to go with the rock guard. We feel that it looks better and will be more usable than a fabric awning. We have lined the inside of the rock guard with silver reflective insulation material. This makes our awning opaque and it provides insulation when closed.

Sharp eye! You are absolutely correct. It is DeLorean 5830 and a 1956 Ford Thunderbird. Unfortunately, both have been neglected since we got Lucy.

Brian,
If they are feeling neglected I know a home in Pennsylvania that would be more than willing to pamper them. Send them on up. Heck, I would even be willing to come and get them.

Have you ever mocked up any pictures of the DeLorean pulling the Airstream. That would be a good one; a Stainles Steel Lead Sled pulling and Aluminum Palace.

I have meant to set up a picture like that for some time now, but never seem to get around to it. We've just been too bust traveling in Lucy.

We have the same rock guard window on the front of our Safari 25A. During heavy rains it allows water to collect on the inside of the rock guard at the bottom seal so water gets trapped between the bottom of the rock guard and the widow. Yesterday after a heavy rain I found that the trapped water had made its way into the bottom of the widow channel and leaked inside the cabin. Arrrgh! The bottom seal of the rock guard covers and seals the window weep holes thus water cannot escape between the rock guard and the window and has no where to go. While it is parked I left one of the rubber hold downs loose so the water would drain from behind the rock guard and no new water intrusion was noted.

Has anyone else encountered this problem with these rock guard windows?

That might explain why there seemed to be water inside under the fresh water tank in our Argosy, after towing her in a pouring rain, which dripped out of the belly pan when we had her parked. We couldn't figure out how it got in there, but that didn't happen until she got her rock guards. Guess we need to go over all the window seals and make sure they are good and sealed with vulkem before our next trip and open the hold downs when we get where we are going if there is a lot of rain on our next trip.

I have not had this problem. Lucy OEM front rock guard has never held water,and the new one that I just installed on Lucy's rear window does not seem to be holding water either. I just checked both rock guards, and neither was holding water after several inches of rain here last night.

I did notice that the OEM rock guard (front) has rubber moulding that does not turn the corner. The new one (rear) has a break in the rubber on each on each side of the bottom (photos attached). If there were no break in the rubber, I could see where this could hold water.

Thanks Brian,

I was considering cutting some slots (in line with the window weep holes) in the bottom seal to allow water to escape. Your pictures confirms that the seal need not go around the whole window. This should be an easy fix. Thanks for the quick response and very helpful pictures.
