How to waterproof Fabric?
Our 86 SOV has a zip dee awning that is in good shape. However last weekend while camping we got some good down pours. We had it tilted to one side to get the water to run off, but it just poured right threw the fabric. Is there a product to spray on to waterproof it again. Any suggestions will help. Thanks

I'm wondering if products for waterproofing tents would be appropriate? I've also seen a product at Jo-Ann Fabrics for this ....
Maybe contact paper

Sunbrella, who supplies the fabric to Zip Dee, uses 303 High Tech Fabric Guard, or some similar name. You can go to the Sunbrella web site for the exact name. Available at Marine hardware stores and several places on the Internet.
It comes in two or three sizes. One with a sprayer.

Check the seams, IIRC mine leaked there. I used seam sealer from a camping supply store to swell the threads and all was well.

Zip-Dee suggests to restore water resistance, wash the awning fabric after thoroughly brushing, by soaking the awning with water and then using either their proprietary soap or a solution of 1 gallon luke-warm water to 1/4 cup natural soap (Ivory soap flakes came immediately to mind, also Woolite). Scrub well with a bristle brush. The trick is to roll up the awning for 15 to 20 minutes to allow the soap solution to thoroughly penetrate the fabric. After soaking, rinse very, very thoroughly. Then air dry.
Understand that the awning is not totally waterproof, ever. Seam leaks can be treated but you are inviting a bushel basket of nightmare if you apply waterproofing agents.

Yes, check out the Sunbrella website.
Also, boat guru Don Casey provides some sage advice about cleaning Sunbrella: Waterproofing Canvas by Don Casey
In our experience with boat canvas, it is best to clean it before applying the 303 High Tech Fabric Guard, which is an excellent product.
