Carefree Awning... worth repairing or just move on?

I have, what appears to be, most of the pieces for the Carefree Awning that came with my 78 Sov. From what I can tell I'm only missing the brace arm, travel hook, and the adjustable top bracket. I have the awning rail still secured via rivets to the roof top and I've yet to crack open the winding mechanisms to see if they're intact.

Can anyone else see anything obvious that I'm missing? If not, are you guys familiar with a place I can buy these parts? Carefree does not sell them anymore.

I believe they are worth saving, ESP if the springs are good and you have the elusive top plugs for the arms.

Iam in Tampa, a neighbor of mine is a carefree rep and has discontinued stock. Supposedly none of these parts have been produced in 15 years. I also have some spare curved awning parts, feel free to PM me and I'll check out what I've got.

The arms that I have for my awning which came with my parts trailer look like those, but I thought they were a & e. Am I mistaken or are they the same? If so, I only have the arms and mounting brackets and need the awning parts, i.e. the tube and the end pieces that are spring loaded. I would be interested in your neighbors supply if shipping is decent. Let me know. Thanks!!

Ha! So between the two of us, we MAY have one decent awning. I can tell you that if you're missing the tube and the springs, you're probably not going to find them easily. Good luck in your search!

I know right?! I think I actually found them in Wisconsin, but that is a long way to ship. Do you happen to know whether or not if the tube and springs for a zip dee would still mount to the A & E arms?? The person is checking on the make for me.

There are a bunch of awnings and parts (old stock) on Atlanta craigslist right now, just in case you are interested, carefree of Colorado. I don't know if parts might be interchangable....

Here is the ad:

Hi Well my 75 Carefree Awning looks like yours, not a lot of parts involved, arms are in two sections with a sliding lock then the roller, and if lucky the center brace.
HELP, last trip the left hand roller "bearing" and end cap died. These are metal caps, I ordered replacements
but they were the plastic end caps, will be happy to part with them.
HELP now I need to take the roller off, how do I release the spring tension without getting killed?
Jim

Jim, I don't know the answer to your question unfortunately, but I'm sure I've seen threads on it. I'd say a quick search would yield results.

How much am I looking at to replace this awning with a new one? I can't get my Airstream Dealer to call me back.

Hi Scott.
So wondering if you have any updates on the awning?

Nope, thanks for asking, but I haven't touched it actually. I'm going to take it out tomorrow and see what's going on with it.

A new A&E awning would cost roughly 2/3 of what a ZipDee would. Carefree no longer supports (sells) awnings with the curved hardware. You would need a 21' awning.

Ok, but how much is that? I literally have no clue what to expect to pay for a new awning.

While I'd like to tell you, the last time I posted a price on here the post was deleted by the mods. I am also not allowed to tell you where I work, but you can look for the Airstream dealer in the same city listed in my profile, and call them. I may even answer the phone.

Just replaced the fabric on my 1975 Carefree Awning. The rear bearing and cap were
all chewed up, after removing the rear end plug, took the cap off, hammered it straight,
however no way to get it on the spring side of the roller. So, took a large steel washer,
drilled it to shaft size, notched it to fit in awning roller, then put the steel cap back on, this gave me about 1/4 clearance to the arms..but is seems to work ok. Not much bearing surface however. Hope to get a few more years out of it

Well I found out how much a replacement awning is, so that's a start I suppose. I never got around to looking at mine last weekend because I had other problems to deal with. I really would hate to drop $1300 on a new awning when I could get by with $500 or so.

Ok, so THIS WEEKEND I'll drop it down and see what's what. Do you still have the support brackets for me?

A good friend just had new fabric made for the Carefree on his 67 Overlander. After much searching he located a vinyl fabric with the original vertical strips rather than the horizontal type that is common now. It was not cheap, but his hardward was in good shape. I am going to do the same for my 68.
Caution: with no fabric on the roller, the whole thing will fall when you release it. Have a friend on the other end and gently lay both arms down so it doesn't get damaged or so someone doe not get hurt.
