Can I leave the broken spring in my Zip Dee?

I am repairing a broken spring on my 1990 Excella’s ZipDee, and while I was able to get most of the old spring out, the remnant of the broken spring went past the metal dimple that holds the spring in place. It seems impossible to retrieve at this point.

Is it OK for the old piece just to hang out in the roller tube? Will it affect the installation of the new spring?

I suggest contacting ZipDee at 800-338-2378. They have excellent customer service...
