Best place to buy awnings?

We're thinking of buying a ZipDee awning for our '72 Sovereign this summer. Our trailer has never had one but the rail is there. We know we want a blue and white striped one but where to buy? We can install ...

Kay.

Sorry, but the blue and white stripe Zip Dee color was discontinued some time ago.

The most popular color Airstream owners pick is # 4755, Pacific Blue Fancy.

Minno,
based on our purchase and buying awnings for both curbside and roadside an Airstream dealer would work as a starting point. Also check the INLAND RV website as they have a 20% off and Andy knows the Airstream trailers and can fix you up with possibly by the VIN number. He'll respond to this e-mail as he is all over it and will tell what he can or cannot do.
We've had great luck for both purcahse and installation by the dealer. Zip Dee gets them out in about 10 days depending on the length. I've spoke with customer service an few times and they are very friendly. The Airstream dealer will actually count the rivet length of the trailer, not just do a measurement. Interesting, but it does work for fitting the awning.
From there website this is what it states "You can find an authorized Zip Dee Dealer just by calling our Customer Service department at 800-338-BEST (2378). No automated voicemail at Zip Dee, our phones are answered in person. Just ask for Customer Service and tell them what State you are in or going to, and they will direct you to the best Zip Dee Dealer in that area."
Make sure you are sitting down when you get the quote. The shipping is expensive especially when you go to but the roller and aluminum for the curbside 21' 9 " , if that is the size.
Within the classified of the Forums, someone did have an awning (Pacific Blue) that was for sale for only $500.00, that the owner had purchased and her husband had passed. it is on page five under parts and appliances and states: Zip Dee Awning 21'9" for Airstream. This is a great deal if it is still available.
We've done all of our awnings over time, but well worth it as your outside space expands by about 250 sq ft.

Good luck

We bought ours direct from Zip Dee and the price was ok but the S/H was pretty high! We're going to instal it this Spring.

Andy, I replied to your PM before I saw your post. We'll have to look at the color selections again.

It was discontinued by Sunbrella several years ago. The awning in the picture was made from the last piece that Zipdee had.

Kay,
The Zip-Dee factory is a short 400 miles from the twin cities. It would make for a nice four day weekend trip to the factory to have your awning installed there and tour around Chicago a little bit. Bring your own Trempro. I hear they like silicone there.

Ordered the awning through Inland RV and received it on Fridy. I didn't think shipping was all that bad. We've paid more to ship other large items.

Question: Step 2 of the installation instructions say on 1973 and older Airstreams that the oven vent need to be removed. Kinda hard to tell with all the snow on the trailer right now, but I'm wondering how much in the way the vent cover is. Anyone have any experience with this? Can I lower the oven vent instead of removing it completely, and if so, by how much do I need to lower it?

Chris.

The vent cover on your Airstream, interfers with the awning resting on the shell. Instead the awning will rest on that stove exhaust cover.

Years ago, Zip Dee had a replacement cover that was aluminum, but the mold broke, and they decided to not have it fixed.

The replacement allows the awning to rest on the shell.

We have had them ever since that happened. They are made with fiberglass.

By far, that is the most popular color especially for the older Airstreams.

Hi Andy - slightly confused. Nothing too unusual about that...

The vent cover on our trailer is aluminum I believe. But, be that as it may, if it interferes with the awning, then it needs to be replaced or moved.

Are you saying you carry a replacement cover that will not interfere with the awning and still use the same vent opening in the trailer?

The "hood" of the stove vent cover is too high towards the awning rail.

It's replacement moves the "hood" away from the awning rail downward.

Moving the "hood" downward has no effect on the vent exhaust system, but does allow the awning to rest on the shell instead of the raised part of the vent cover.
