I use plastic 2 step folding stool to tighten wheels. When I tighten I squeeze both arms, takes up slack so can make tighter. The so called stick is junk only good to pull strap main awning, it can slip out of wheel making long scratch in clear coat

Yup, I agree.

I use the stick to LOOSEN the wheels, turn the awning lock and on the pull strap; to both open and close the awning. I also use to pull the pads under levelers and chocks. I use a stool to TIGHTEN the wheels on awning lock.
I store the stick on the handle inside the door; also shortened so it would fit.

Has anyone come up with something better? Any ideas?

Thanks!
I use a collapsable stool that I got from Amazon. Sure is handier than the zip dee stick.

I'm the OP on this thread and just wanted to thank everyone for their ideas.

I purchased a "boat hook" which will serve the purpose of hooking the awnings to pull them down, but also serve as a hook to pull things (and push) from (and into) the bed of the truck.

Should work very well and like that it is collapsible and has a nylon tip.

Again thanks!
