I need to add an awning package to a 1968 Tradewind and I do not have measurements, thoughts or ideas on where to start?

My 27' 2001 Safari only had a curb side awning. It suffered with a 13.5K Penguin when direct sun temperatures hit 100. I added an awning on the street side. When pulled out the awning attached with a strap just under the belt line. I've attached a picture of that trailer with the awning rolled up. You can see the attachment hook that the awning strap connects to when it was pulled out. It's right on the blue decal strip below the chrome belt line trim.

Bottom line adding that shade made a heck of a difference and I found the trailer was noticeably cooler in full sun situations after that enhancement. You will notice the awning was long enough to shade both windows on that side of the trailer.

Adding window awnings had risen to the top of my list of upgrades. Last week temps here in the upper 90s. And I thought summer was done.

Can they be ordered from zip Dee

Motivated

You people have motivated me to get the driver's side and rear awning and mount it myself! I will need guidance for sure! I also need to find out where to get it. I am in Saint Augustine, FL

The rear curtains can be adjusted, with the awning out, meaning you always have a view, but can also have shade. Messing with my awnings is one of my favorite things about my AS. LOL.

You can order directly from Zip Dee. Install it yourself.

Or…

Lewster here on the forum installs awnings. Naples FL, I think.

Great thread and great helping link. What do you all think about a Safari and the street-side awning? They have few windows on that side but there are two and also the side of the trailer too. It is worth it in that case?

Awning Installed

Ok, now I can share with updated info and experience. Also Jcanavera had already answered my question about the Safari and the two windows- missed it.

So, I ordered the awning from Zip Dee. For a 25' (12'4"ish) it came out to just over $1200 for the awning but I also ordered it in a custom fabric which was 10% more. The shipping they warned me would be from $600-900 alone. It was just over $2000 total.

How to measure: Measuring for what size you need is a two person job. Take a tape measure and measure down the side from the mid-point of the front rivet line (center of rivet) to the rear rivet line (center of rivet). Make sure you try to keep tape straight and measure to the center of the rivets not the edge of the panel. Measure more than once with one person at front and the other at rear. That is the size you will need. Zip Dee says every trailer varies a bit so they do not just go by trailer model size and they accept no returns as it is custom made for you.

I contacted a dealer down the street from them thinking that I would travel up to Zip Dee, take delivery to save the shipping and then go get it installed but I also learned about the Illinois tax and the install cost.

They wanted $1000 to install the awning and it was about a 4-5 hour job they said.

I ordered it and got it about 2.5 weeks later. I read through the directions several times. I discovered a youtube video made by ZipDee on the job and also they did not include any fasteners at all for mounting the rail. I had to wait on those to come after I requested the rivets. I did as much as I could alone but several segments of the job require two people. Popping the chalk line, initial rail attachment, sliding the awning to the rail and winding the spring are two person jobs. The remainding attaching, sealing rivets, travel pin, deploy hook, etc., you can do alone. It is quite a bit of work but what satisfaction when you stand back and look at it knowing it is done well and you saved $$$$.

It took me most of the day to do it. I was slow intentionally. I do not like drilling holes in my Airstream. It came out looking nice. I got a complimentary stripe pattern that shares the gray color of my solid curb side patio awning.

Well done!

That first hole you drill into the pretty aluminum is scary. Measure twice (or ten); drill once.

The, “yes, I did that”, feeling is priceless.
