Alumaguard on Carefree awnings?

`
I'm interested in ordering new awning material with (Alumaguard) for my 1976 21' awning.

I called Carefree . . . their sales person told me Alumaguard won't work on curved arms. She didn't know why.

I really don't want bare fabric exposed up there on the roller for outside storage. Has anybody got experience with installing Alumaguard on 70's Carefree awnings? Is there a workaround?

Uniguard would be better than nothing but I don't want the black tube up there.

Thanks!

You can get awning material with Alumi-gard to work by adjusting the arms higher in the stored position. This allows the guard to roll up to cover the awning material. If I remember correctly I was told by other members here who have done this that it works fine with no issues. Seems like the adjustment was to move the arms two or three holes higher. Ed

I have one that I need to install. I actually ordered it for our 31' back in 08 but never installed it. I was told that it would work, but because of the curved arms and the Airstream curvature that a few inches of the awning fabric may remain exposed at the lower edge.

Alumaguard Carefree Awing

I look at this page . . . and I can't see why it won't work.

Maybe it needs an adapter to the top rail.

*************

Alumaguard
No-Leak Metal Wrap

In addition to the extra protection of a metal-wrap cover, Alumaguard features a patented design that catches and channels water away. Every slat features a vinyl seal that compresses and prevents leaks. Available with all fabrics.

The rail is straight and seamless. The seal between the rail and the metal wrap cover stops the water draining off the roof of your RV. The patented vinyl seal in the Carefree Alumaguard lead slat compresses against the inside of the rail.
Carefree's patented "Drain-AwayTM" design works as a gutter to catch and channel water away. Other brands pool water there.
Every metal slat hinge is protected by our patented vinyl seal which is pinched together by the joined slats.

Did you order the material and the alumaguard from Carefree?

Thanks!

Any advice on ordering and installing Carefree awning fabric with Alumaguard? Anyone?

Anybody order Alumaguard with one extra section to address the cover issue?

This is a picture of the gutter configuration used by Carefree on the new Alumaguard. I understand this design is the reason they say the Alumaguard won't work on curved arms. Is there an adapter available to let this guard work on an Airstream?

Is this the design on the Alumaguard / Carefree replacements that members have had success using?

This is ZIP-DEE's answer to the Alumaguard issue. Item #204 looks like the missing link for the Alumaguard on Carefree hardware.

What do you think?

Splitrock, That looks great on your trailer and it is that same as what the folks at Scotties told me it would look like. Did you order from Carefree or thru Scotties? I haven't settled on color yet but was leaning toward that same blue. Ed

Hi Ed,

I ordered it through Scottie's. The contact person was Leshia. She knew everything, ka-bang, ka-boom. She took me to the color chart web page, gave me a price on the spot and gave me a delivery date . . . less than two weeks. It was a one call order. It came early by Fed Ex in a clean undamaged heavy cardboard tube.

I forgot to order a pull strap. I just made one, no big deal.

Both Scottie's and Carefree told me the Alumaguard wouldn't work on curved arms but neither of them knew why. It worked with no problems at all. I don't know what they're talking about. :-)

I felt like I was taking a little risk by trusting a bunch of strangers on a web forum and ignoring the dealer and the company making the awning:-) But I made the right decision. When I saw the awning in the tube, I knew it was going to work.

Yeah!

Great news on the awning! So you forgot about the pull strap that wasn't so bad! Did you give Leshia the bead sizes or was she able to get that without your input? Ed

Once I told her that the awning was a Carefree on a 1976 Airstream with arms 21' on center, she knew all the rest.

I had wasted energy on pre-awning anxiety.

It fits good, tight all across. The well meaning forum advise to buy a roller with material attached wouldn't apply to my experience.

See, I knew the gals at Scotties would be able to help out. I also know what you mean about advice. Even here on the forums sometimes people get over zealous with "replace with new" advise. I am from the old school of if it works why replace it! I am so glad that you are pleased with your new awning canvas as this is the same route I am going with my Carefree awning when I get that far. Good luck and enjoy your trailer, Ed

I called Scottie's today and talked to Felicia. http://www.scottiescanvas.com/
(800-780-8677)

She was a awesome help. We looked up fabric colors, I picked the one I wanted and she ordered it and an Alumaguard. We are going to see if it works. Felicia did tell me that they were told the Alumaguard would not work. As some on the forum said they didn't have a problem we are going to cross our fingers and give it a try. The awning should be here in two weeks.

The only issue I've had with the Alumaguard on my Carefree awning is the front arm stands off just far enough that the stowing slide lock won't fit over the locking hook. The rear one is tight, but it drops in. I haven't messed with adjusting the arm yet. I may just have a slightly longer hook made, or maybe have an extended "U" bracket made.

The trailer is not being towed right now and it looks good sitting in the yard. I'm glad I ordered the Alumaguard. I'd do it again. Next time I'd remember to order the strap.
