On wet days, the curbside awning (properly adjusted) is also helpful in giving you some cover from the rain outside the trailer door, directing the rainwater to whichever corner of the awning you've set a bit lower. Other awnings would keep some rain off the windows beneath them, letting you keep the windows open with less concern of rain blowing in.
To your concerns about wet weather, they CAN get a bit mildewed if you roll them up wet and leave them rolled up, but if you have to furl the awnings when they're wet you just need to open them up to dry when you get home or to your next destination. The fabric isn't particularly sensitive to actual rot, but of course it's easier to prevent mildew than it is to clean it off.
