1964 Awning

Hello, just wanted to share a couple of photos and see if any one has an awning/screen room like the one I have.

RacerX, I was looking at some posts and noticed your avatar photo shows part of what looks like the same awning as the one we have. Did yours come with the trailer?

Ours came with the trailer when we purchased her. The awning/room is pretty bulky and storing the poles and all is not the easiest thing to take with us. However we do love it. Having a bug free zone to hang in is kind of nice when the mosquito's are swarming about.

Does anyone else have one of these? How do you like it?

batman- saw your awning. I have a Safari like yours that has an extrusion for an awning and a Caravel that does not. Do you slide a rope through the awning to hold it in place. I saw a similar awning as yours on a '66 Caravel at a Rally. They didn't have the sides up, which probably reduces the amount of storage. I don't think a ZipDee looks period correct on these trailers, and on the shorter ones, there's not much available exterior skin to mount them without getting into compound curve skins or end caps.

Hello Doc, Yes it is a rope and pole awning. It has three rope channel "extrusions" one on top and one on each of the sides. It also has a snap on skirt on the inside bottom (see photo). It is original 1964. So period correct. The PO had the awning in storage and canvas is in great shape. I would like to know more about the company who made it "United Tent". Can't find anything on the internet.

We had an awning like this (w/o the side panels) - but it didn't come with our trailer, we got it separately. I absolutely loved the look and we always got comments on it at rallies - but we don't use or have it anymore.

We stopped using it for a couple of reasons:
  • Bulky & heavy canvas & steel poles
  • Harder to set-up with one person
  • Canvas was "getting old"
  • A micro-burst wind came up and flipped the whole thing over our trailer (even though it was staked down)& broke windows
  • We decided to change to a Zip Dee on both sides of our trailer
Still love the look of the vintage rigid-pole awnings, but really appreciate the ease of our ZipDees even more!

Shari

Dennis- thanks, my Caravel has the range vent in the way of where the channel should run, so I'm still figuring out how I'll go about an awning. Jerry
