Rare spare tire cover?

Greetings to all from a long time lurker - first time poster. I have a question about the unusual rear mounted spare tire cover that came on my 1962 Tradewind. It is aluminum and has the words "For Perfect Towing - Airstream" painted on it.

I looked on the forum to see if anyone else had one like it and found a thread that told the story of someone rescuing one that was being used as a flower bed or for outdoor lighting.

I have two questions. First.....does anyone know the history behind the covers? And two......seeking advise about restoration. I'd like to polish the cover, but would also like to keep the "For Perfect Towing" lettering intact. The letters seem to be hand painted, so I suppose a sign painter could repaint them post polish? But what about the patina factor? Would hate to lose the originality. Any/all ideas appreciated. IETed

I'm not sure about the historical background, but it's safe to say you have something quite rare and special! I'm a big fan of of keeping original patina where possible, so that would be my choice. Thanks for sharing, it looks amazing!

I know this is an older post, but thought I would add mine on here. I also have on on my Tradewind, mine appears to be white originally. I'm trying to figure out what I want to do also. I could repaint to what it was like originally, polish and paint the words back on or just leave it polished.
