Looks great - now you I can't wait for spring - I want to get the swirls out of mine - going to buy me a cyclo - - - - got my belly pan finished this weekend - looks great...

Think I'll go lie underneath my trailer for a while and just gaze at my nice new aluminum. :-)

10 years ago I used to own a few boats on the Chesapeake Bay. Each spring we had the boat pulled from the water and scraped, sanded and painted the bottom. This was some work indeed.

Now that I have my 1990 Excella, I'm just fine with how she looks. An occassional wash and wax job shines her up just fine, even though the clearcoat is beginning to fail. It never fails....every time we take her out, we are always asked for a tour by a person who's always wanted an AS.

It's not so much the looks on the outside, but who we are that attract other people. I'd say the same is true of our Airstreams.

Why we polish? Why Not?

Ego, not really.

To clean off the peeling clear coat and remove the oxidation,
YES.....


I'm going to do my 67 this Spring. I sort of dread it.

But the results will be worth it.

I want to see all the dull oxidized 50's and early 60's polished.
That would be coool.

Great thread.... I like the patina. Think it looks 10 times better than polished. I always regret the need to polish. I polished mine due to repairs. I now love the polished look and am a slave to it. I bought Jesters kit this week and am very anxious to go at it. I wish my trailer could have stayed patina though.

Distant drummer, you can camp next to me anytime anywhere. I even will camp with white boxes. It is about the interactions not the color of your skin.

Polishing does become addictive. Six of us ganged up at a rally and polished a unit members 55 bubble. She, the owner, was thrilled.




The roof too. the roof is just as significant as the rest. You don't just brush the ten teeth you see do you?

Excellent point~!! As We all have seen recently, Wally apparently was in favor of painting his personal Airstreams white or, as it was in one case, the anodized gold finish.
My own personal preceptive:
In defense of expending hundreds of hours polishing a Airstream, I will say this, the ole gal was in pretty bad shape and, the quoted 4,000$ just screamed for a local solution.
Like everyone else that ever attempted to polish their unit, it's a huge undertaking and, at the same time, a tremendous learning curve to overcome. There's alot to be said for the expression, OJT..
Has anyone polished their unit in less time? YES~! But..the results speaks for themselves. Whether the unit is a perfect 10 or close, it matters not, they all still look ever so much better than before.

I'm open to the idea of polish or patina... I just can't get excited about doing anything but painting the roof.
