Bob.

Only ways to protect that hard work.

1. Clearcoat the trailer.

2. Wax and wax and wax, every 6 months, to make super sure that the elements cannot harm that hard work.

Over waxing is never a problem.

Under waxing allows the elements to do their nasty work.

80 hours and never again.. ~!

Down to the last level of polish,,, and trust me,, NEVER AGAIN! I have waxed cars and trucks with paste wax and to polish out an old Airstream has to be the hardest job I have ever done..

So clear coat... MMmmmm?? What flavor or such does one look for.. Just a auto type clear coat?

Somewhere I read that if one has a high grade finish on Alum,, then the clear coat will not stick and will peel off in a few years.. Then one would be right back to square one..

Love the look of a polished up 40 year old Airstream,, but My goodness..

Automotive clear paint is designed to be applied on top of paint, never aluminum.

Airstreams clearcoat lasts about 5 to 6 years with proper care, which is designed to stick to aluminum.

It all depends on someones wishes as to where and how they want to spend money and their own energies.

I use Meguires products on my vehicles. After reading Andy's suggestion to use wax on the polished aluminum, I called Meguires to get their take on it. They said that waxing the aluminum will offer protection to the exposed aluminum and they recommend waxing.

Good to know. Thanks for the heads up Andy!

Dave.

Alooooooooooooooooooha

I hide from the Airstreams that are on Oahu.

Best I know there are only 3 of them.

And, nope, I am still here until this weekend.

Having a great time, as always.

Mahalo.

They said that both the carnuba and ultimate (synthetic) will have the same result/protection on the aluminum. He said the difference its that The synthetic will last longer.
I tried my cyclo with meguires on the car and the cyclo made easy work of the process. I am determimed to get my money out of that machine!

There are discussions around here on wax in particular, with some decent results/comparisons made. My own experience (not trailers) is that it is worth searching out opinion. Doing it is one thing, doing it more often as a result of saving a few bucks (supplier and material cost), quite another.

That was one reason I asled about the type of wax. The meguires synthetic is $22 per bottle, carnuba is $8

Considering the cost to strip the trailer, and then polishing materials, not to mention the number of hours of labor, and the messes to clean up, then the difference in cost of $14.00 per container of wax, is not worth discussing even over a bottle of water.

Give it the best you can. The rewards are huge.

Look up WALBERNIZE and PAR-FE (as a start). Top auto waxes can go above $100/can as a comparison. What you can buy off the shelf is usually cheapest chemistry with largest ad budget. The right materials/supplies are always cheap.

I have heard of using walbernize on clearcoat. I would be curious if it is as effective on the bare aluminum

I just had a guy tell me about this stuff. He says it's the best.

www.jjvsbest.com

I found a video here:

I wondered if anybody has tried it on Airstream? What does it do to plastic lens and window glass?

Walbernize was designed for the clearcoat, PERIOD, and only.

There ar many other very good waxes to use.

I am using Meguires Ultimate (synthetic) on my vehicles; I will probably use that on the polished aluminum.
speaking of wax protection, the neighbor just got the entire side of the AS with poorly aimed sprinklers and now I have hard water spots down the entire street side. Fabulous! Anyone have a rope?
