I have used it on stripped, not polished, surfaces. It works like any other acid wash. It will ruin a polish job and leave you with a clean, etched aluminum surface.

Is not the intention to take the thread on another direction but, can this be used as a etcher on the roof before painting it?

Yes it can. It is actually the "Brightener" used by aircraft painters in their process. Don't let it drip onto the lower polished surfaces and wash it well (neutralize) before paint.
