$10,000 to reseal the roof or every single seam on your trailer - is that correct? That equals $400 per foot on a 25' trailer.

When to reseal roof seams?

LEak test every few years and definitely try to track down any leak that does reveal itsself. Remember the leak can be on top of the trailer and showup at the window. We used Gutter seal and one more product from Vintage Trailer Supply. The money is in the labor. You have to clean out the old stuff, tape the seams an 1/8 inch away from the edge inorder to get a clean line, and then remove gaskets, etc on the roof to redo them.

The root problem is that Airstream does not use the best sealants available for this; my dealer would not use a marine caulk that I requested because it is not Airstream approved. There are marine sealants that would last a long, long time, also.

Having everything on my 2015 trailer re-sealed at Colonial Airstream. You really don’t want leaks because the water is then absorbed by the fiberglass insulation between the inner and outer skins. Unless you live in Arizona or other dry climate, that’s going to eventually create mold/mildew which will be hard to eliminate and seriously jeopardize the value of your trailer. Some people (like me) can tolerate mold and mildew, but others (like my wife) cannot. Two nights in a motel or hotel room with a slightly dirty A/C filter and she is sick with a respiratory illness.
The seals on my trailer’s roof looked fine, but I’m not taking any chances.

Why do you say that? How long do you expect it to last? Is it because of an easier install.

My rule...NEVER drill unneeded holes in an AS.

I used high strength velcro to secure our rear view camera.

FWIW...I don't seal what isn't leaking. No scratching before the itch.

Like your dealer I used Dicor Roof Coating Elastomeric, one gallon more than enough for roof, about $50 as I recall. Spring of 2017 and still in great shape. My TT a 1998 --31ft Classic has always been outside, mostly stored in SC. It quite time consuming prepping the seams. I use masking tape on each side of seems to make about a one inch neat seem after preparing. It's a 100% acrylic resin that forms a rubber like coating. It's white in color and I think it might be what they use on school buses for reflection--cooling and sealing. IDK for sure. It's got about 25,000 miles and many states and 3 years with no sign of deterioration. I'm 75 now, I sure hope roof problems are behind me. Because it took FOREVER to prep it.

I was at Jackson Center in the fall of 2019 having some work performed. I obtained a quote of "approximately" $3000 to reseal my 27FB Airstream, vintage 2008. I've had leaks repaired at Jackson Center in the past, and often had the leaks return within 2-3 years. Some of the repair jobs on the roof I later observed were accomplished by simply applying more sealant to old sealant. I'm reluctant to spend $3000 for a job I may be redoing a couple of years later. Looks like I'll be spending some time on the roof when the weather warms up this spring and a few days of no rain are forecasted.

Note the quote was approximate because the Service Center will bill for the hours required to perform the job. This is another reason I'm reluctant to have the job performed at Jackson Center. I've been going to Jackson Center for service work for eight years. Over time I've noticed the work pace slowing, more chit chat time between techs on the floor, and less evidence of supervision in the service bay. There has been a commensurate decline in the quality of work performed. There are tremendous differences in the skill level of techs, which also could be a function of inadequate training and supervision. Airstream's rapid growth seems to be negatively impacting quality control in the factory and at the service center. This was the first visit to JC where I did not see the service manager walk through the waiting room or visible on the floor.

I have found the same billing method used by our dealer, that is no fixed price quotes, just hourly billing rates, parts, and shop fees. You can get a guess as to hours, but it is not firm. If the workforce is motivated, time and materials potentially assures better quality, but I am not sure that accounts for inexperienced technicians.

I’ve learned some things from this thread but I’m also a bit confused...

Is the topic of this thread 1) how to seal around roof vents such as bathroom fans, Fantastic Fans, skylights and such?, or 2) how to seal the joints of the overlapping aluminum sheets that are riveted to the ribs, or 3) both of those scenarios?

I believed you got ripped off. If you use Dicor, you have to check your roof every 3 months and I can guarantee you will have to redo some parts of the Dicor sealants ever year. If you look at the airstream website they do not use Dicor as a sealant. The question is why did you dealership used Dicor?

As I said, they used it because they said it was Airstream approved. Nevertheless, I don't have any leaks because i have covered it all in 3M tape, as I said above. It was in good shape when I did the tape, though I did follow 3M instructions for prep.

I applied a standing seam metal roof on our house in the late 90’s. Sealed all the pipes/flashings with a one part urethane, NP1. Finally going to scrap the old stuff off and re-caulk in the spring. Zero leaks, just routine maintenance before any issues arise.

For the 3M tape, are You supposed to strip off all old sealant, or do you cover existing sealant with tape? I’m confused as some say they stripped all old stuff off, and others covered up previously applied sealants?
