wheel noise when brake wire broke

We had the white wire on the right rear wheel brake at the splice, probably due to the Colorado roads. When we pulled into Golden we heard a rubbing, grinding noise. When I crawled under the trailer I discovered the broken wire. My theory, good or bad, is the road bouncing lets the brake pads loosen up beyond their adjustment point and rub against the wheel.

A trip to the auto parts store for a crimper, shrink tubing, and heat gun and I have it repaired. No more noise. So I assume the brake pads went back into their auto-adjusted position.

But the crimp did not hold on the 1000 mile drive back to the Houston area and we again noticed the noise when pulling into the neighborhood. No idea when the wire broke, it was fine in Amarillo so I'm assuming the last 560 miles. I have a ratchet crimper at the house so I fixed it, again. No noise taking it to storage.

I'm wondering if I should take it in for an axle inspection to make sure there was no damage done. We are still in the 3 year warranty period, if that might even be covered. And maybe they have a better connector; it looks like the main brake line is 12 gauge while the actual wire going into the brake assembly is 14 gauge, so the butt splice really should have the different sizes on each side.

We wrapped up a 4200 mile trip to Grand Teton and Yellowstone, so for that to be the only issue I guess I'm pretty happy. The top screw on the bathroom door was not holding so I shoved a toothpick in there and then the screw. Good as new.

The wire only supplies power to the brake magnet. No power no braking.

If you heard metal on metal rolling around sound then yes I'd recommend pulling the wheel and drum for a detail inspection. If you're not able to do that can you get under the trailer and remove the rubber dust cover that covers the adjustment slot. It's roughly at the 6 O'clock position on the backing plate. Look in the slot, use small flashlight and look for UMP's or Unidentified Metal Parts. These would be loose damaged looking brake components. Not good.

I find it really hard to keep all the wires connected all the time. I have just order some step-down heat shrink connectors that I hope will help.
