What is/was this?

Hello, First post on AS Forum. I just purchased a 73 Sovereign 31 ft. There was no manual so I have a lot to figure out about the systems. In this post I have a question, 2 actually, On the roadside just above and to the left of the water heater there is something with 2 wires that is broken off. Does not look like it matches any of the other clearance/marker lights. Also what is the small glass crystal above the water heater? Thanks Terry

Technical jargon alert! That's the turn signal viewer thingie. There are optical cables running to that gizmo from your left and right turn signals. This allows you to see if your signals are working from your drivers side rear-view mirror. The crystal to the right is your polarity signal for when you plug into shore power.

That device is called a tail light monitor. The cover is, appropriately, called a tail light monitor cover.
It has no wires, only fiber optics, when the tail light lights, it sends the light through the fiber optics so the end of it glows, and you can see if it's working in your rear view mirror.
Replacement covers made out of metal are available at many Airstream dealers, just do a quick search.
