72 Landyacht, my new retirement vehicle, on drivers side towards rear, above water heater, is a device with 2 screws; there are 2 lights that face forward under the plastic shroud. I took the shroud off and there was 2 wires leading into the trailer. There is a clear lens next to it. They seem to be on after new, as the blue vinyl is cut and pushed back.
I believe these are lights (fiber optic?) that are fed by your tail lights. They allow you to see whether or not your tail lights are working. I may be wrong, someone else jump in here if so.

That's correct. There are fiber cables that go to each tail light. You can see the turn indicators and brake lights there in the driver's side rear view mirror. Pretty dim so it works best at night. If you take off the brake light lens you should see a small round black gasket with a plastic center behind the bulb. You can get a new cover at Out of Doors Mart or other vendors.
And the clear dome to the right of the fibre-optic indicator is a battery polarity check light. Both are original to the trailer.
You can download the 1972 manual from the mother ship's website here: https://www.airstream.com/service/ma...ear_select=878

My Moms Caddy had those on hood and rear "package shelf"... Thought it was kewl in the day!!
We also had those in IBM 3420 tape drives... They faced a filament lamp which cooked the end of the fibre facing the bulb... Lots of intermittent failures resulted.

The clear light to the right is not a polarity check for the battery(s) it is to check the "so called" polarity of the shore power connection. If the light is on the shore power hot and neutral are reversed somewhere.
