Pergo?
Rog and Overlander 64 have hit the nail generally on the head, butI have 2 small suggestions:
1.If you live in a damp place like I do in drippy Oregon or frequent same I am not sure Pergo would be my first choice; it would be high quality one piece sheet vinyl near the door as this has worked super on my Caravel. We had a bad experience with Pergo in an entrance area to our home where it was almost always wet and muddy; it did not hold up well.
2. Have a pro inspect the underside carefully and repair any small openings or dry rot in the undertank plywood (for fresh water tank). I had a small leak that took over 20 years to become visible from the undersink area; had I discovered it sooner it would have saved a lot of rework agony. Same for the small openings due to resident rodents and bad stinging insects like mud wasps, paper wasps and hornets ( had all over the many years).
One final tip; pass on you older unit to an interested family member who will appreciate your care and custodianship over the years.

Ok, this newbie (to the forum) will bite? Is my '86 even considered a "vintage"? Noticed that some places say older than 25 years.

Hi Waynon. In Airstream terms, 25 yrs or older = vintage, so your coach will become "vintage" in 2011.
Given the longevity of Airstreams, maybe we need to come up with a term for units that are 50+ or 75+. Silver and gold?

I am considering looking for a Bambi II. Where can I get a set of drawings and specifications, so that I understand what I am getting. I see a lot of photos, but it is hard to understand the actual dimensions of what is actually inside.

You may also want to print this out to read about the features of all the 1964 models.

Sneakingup: Great website, but it scares the heck out of me, as I've just reactivated my Dad's '63 Bambi, which has been sitting outside unused for 27 years. He used it regularly before he died, and it was fine, so the thought of structural damage hadn't crossed my mind, until I read this thread.
Plans now are for a young lady's Dad to pull it about 200 miles from Decatur, GA to Asheville, NC; leave it parked there for 5 months, then pull it back.
Would it be adequate to have them pull it around locally in low traffic periods and look for any shifting; or must i pull the panel and inspect?
(Anyone's opinion would be appreciated, as I only have this week to decide what to do.)

I would have it looked at for overall soundness of structure, appliances and brakes and definately change the tires if they are more than 4-5 years old and pack the wheel bearings - for starters.

Stephanie, I agree with you. A new Vintage Airstream owner may have many questions. And it does help to ask one question and get an answer.
This gets many opinions on one question. Then proceed to the next problem/question. Trying to solve all problems at one timecan be difficult.
Going through too many threads to get your answer NOT GOOD.
Once you know the "ropes" you can solve the problems easier.
New on board...NEED immediate answers. You make forum friends and share experiences. Like having a security blanket.

Actually, 1980 IS considered vintage by VAC terms! Anything 25 years or older...so this year we are up to 1982!
Sorry, I just don't have the knowledge or interest to research or maintain trailer information much beyond the 60's. I'll let someone else take up that mantle ~

Back to "what can we agree on"
FWIW, I've been living on the Forum for several weeks now, gleaning every scrap of information on AS , especially for my '67 Safari, that I can find. I've rebuilt lots(!) of vintage stuff in my 54 yrs and this has been the best source of info I have ever found. The one problem I have had is following a thread or doing a search and finding that the info doesn't pertain to my trailer or was only mentioned in passing. Yes, there have been numerous questions on the same subject over the years, and I have been guilty of asking those myself. Instead of adding to a thread that's a year or more old, I've sent more than a few PM's to members who seem to have some knowledge of what I'm asking. Lot's of replys and assistance. I hope that's OK by forum standards. I'm really trying to follow the rules. It does seem like a new catagory could be started, but how many of us can handle even more information? Maybe these comments will help some new member.

Thanks Shari,
That means next year my Excella will be vintage. Much as I like the 67, I really like the 83. More light inside, bigger fridge, bedroom, and gray tank. I wish I knew enough to help with the mantle, but I’m just learning about it myself.

Cummulative checklist and repair guide
Hi Streamer folks,
As the newest member of this forum, at least a few minutes ago I was, and also having done less than anyone else on this blog on my AS, and therefor in need of the most complete check list and DIY fix it directions, I'd like to point out that what I'd like to see is all the great lists and updates to lists in a 'Wikkipedia' like document that is updated and resides in one place. So I just went there;
Airstream - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
and found not only this forum listed, but almost all the other great web sites I've kust spent several weeks of free evenings finding on my own through Google, etc.
Should such a general, cooperative document be set up in this or another forum?

seems to me there should be some sort of seperation between vintage & antique ? i prefer to consider door in door a principal marker of the vintage as opposed to the 65 and later ?

Good idea though. I guess what you really want is a FAQ. Do we even have one. It's nice to have all the regular questions together so folks can be pointed to it first. But then again, I love it when someone new posts about their trailer, even if they are asking something we've heard before. It's always fun to hear about someone elses problems and welcome them to the group.

Now where was that floor thread? Steve
