Using other than an AS dealer to make repairs

Has anyone use dealers other than an AS dealer to make repairs when their AS is out of warranty?

To repair or replace an appliance inside or fix a water leak or propane issue? Sure, no problem. Airstreams use pretty standard components.

To repair the skin? No. I'd also hesitate for roof-related repairs, unless I know they understand walking around up there requires a lot of caution. (The one local shop we go to has a guy that is familiar with Airstreams, so I'd trust them, but otherwise I'd hesitate.)

I haven't, but have friends here who have, mainly because the dealers around here are so bad. Results are mixed, but overall better than with the dealers here.

Depends on the repair. We haven't had to have much done, but a windy day and an awning problem were solved at the nearest RV dealership.

The folks at A&P Vintage Trailer Works can do Airstream warranty work. They are on the near Northwest side of the Dallas Ft worth area. They did the solar installation and disc brake conversion on our Classic along with some custom wood work and electrical work.

I have had service at both my closest AS dealer, and a local RV dealer, I prefer going to the local guy. It does help that he is 2 minutes from my house, vs 90 minutes, but they are generally excited to have an AS come into thier shop.

Unless it is somthing thats AS specific, I wouldnt hesitate going to a non AS dealer - it will probably cost you less.

Now that my Airstream is out of warranty, I do all my own repairs.

Learning Curve

Read what Skater said in Post #2. You may want to PM him for a recommendation.

Remember that there is no good relationship between working on fiberglass and wood units and riveted aluminum. The learning curve is very high - do not pay for inexperienced people to learn how to repair aluminum.

Systems repairs are a different matter - a water heater is a water heater regardless of the trailer it is in. How the plumbing and wires are run may require some previous expertise.- get a fixed cost instead of an estimate if the repair facility is not "Airstream Rated".

There ARE good non-Airstream Dealer repair facilities - you just have to fine one with AS experience.
