Tire Change or Not?
file:///Users/bauerg/Downloads/20200...02_resized.jpg
Just got a call from the mothership. They found a bolt through my tire. Hopefully the picture will show up in this message. What do you think, should I replace the tire?
Hard to imagine it didn't blow or deflate. . . . Sometimes you get lucky as we may have had it in there for over 300 miles.

Time for at least one new tire. And a gentle thank you to the gods that kept it from causing a big problem!

Buy a new one, and if the rest are more than 4 years old, replace them all. Say a little prayer of thanks that the tire didn't blow. A TPMS is also a wise investment.

I've had a similar experience with my TV, where a bolt was "fully integrated" into the tire with no apparent loss of air pressure over, presumably, a few hundred miles. I think it's incredible that the bolt seals so well against the tire.
That being said, your tire was not constructed for permanent use when the belts have been pierced like this. Replace it and be thankful that you discovered it this way instead of in some other catastrophic manner.

Actually, the trailer is a 2019 we bought in December. Haven't checked the age of the tires, but I would assume that they are not that old. Of course I told them to replace it. I might mount this and hang it on the wall of my garage as a trophy - what do you think?

Bolt in tire
Wow! Chalk one up for the Goodyear Endurance tires AS are now equipped with. That is really something that it did not have failure and tear up the wheel well.
Nice trophy for the mancave and quite a conversation starter for anyone that sees it. Buy a lottery ticket. You are a lucky AS owner.

It's probably a grade 5 or higher bolt, they're self sealing.

Great idea, maybe to keep the weight down you could get a hi res photo zoomed in and plak-it , this would make a awesome guy talk for a least 2-3 beers

AH! yah! time for a new tire ... if the rest are close to 4 year old buy the whole set - tires $700.00 - cost of repair to Airstream because of blow out $7000.00 IMHO call it cheap insurance.

If you have to ask, change it.
Cost vs benefit/safety, you choose.

You replaced the tire, obviously. Now get a TPMS so the next time you acquire a bolt in the wrong place, and it leaks, you’ll know about it! We use TireMinder.

Great example to illustrate the value of TPMS. I will be installing one soon. Though I check tire pressure before every trip and torque lug nuts at least every week or so while on a trip,, I just discovered a screw in my tire tread upon routine inspection. There was no obvious appearance change in the tire but pressure was 28 lbs. (80 recommended for the Goodyear Endurance tires on my 2019 25’ FC). You cannot “see” low pressure.
I was actually lucky to have this puncture (and to discover it). When I refilled it and drove 2 miles to my local Les Schwab tire dealer they discovered that my shock absorber on that tire had lost a nut and was hanging free.
Les Schwab fixed the tire and replaced a nut without charge - even though these were the original tires not purchased at their store.
Here’s my disappointment. Because Les Schwab didn’t have the correct nut they suggested I go to the nearby Home Depot for a replacement. Fortunately, to help me they removed a matching nut I could take for comparison. HD didn’t have the correct nut so I drove 8 miles to a specialty fastener store. Meanwhile I called Jackson Center and gave them my AS VIN and asked for the correct size to request at the specialty store. They told me it was a “5/8 flanged hex”. When I gave the clerk at the store the actual nut to match for the replacement he returned with a 1/2 “ nut. I questioned him and he demonstrated on a gauge that this was indeed a 1/2” nut that was on my AS. I thanked him and returned to Les Schwab where they easily installed the 1/2” nut and the one they had removed as a sample.
Bottom line - despite the wonderful stories I’ve heard about Jackson Center, I was disappointed with their inaccurate information that could have been very inconvenient had Les Schwab not had the foresight to provide me an actual sample of what I needed.

When I first got my AS I didn't know anything about where things were. I emailed them and asked how to get to the water pump so I could winterize. They said I needed to raise the floor of the closet and it would be underneath. Well that floor was screwed down so I knew it couldn't be the access. It was a panel just below that but with no handle. I pried it open and had the access I needed. I've continued to contact them about other matters and I get a good answer about half the time. It can take them quite a while to respond too.
