Those damn European hinges

I'm not a Europhobe, but they can keep their damn hinges. Meanwhile I keep having them come apart (not in a position to post pictures). Remember, there's a piece on the cabinet box and a piece on the door. the piece on the door shoehorns into the piece on the box, but my getting them back together is a matter of luck, not skill. I've looked on line. It seems to be one of those things that's so easy that nobody has posted anything about it . Can some one give me a clue about what the approach is?

The part closest to the hinge needs to engage the fixed mount on the doorframe first, then the far end can be clicked in pretty easily. I've built 3 IKEA kitchens over time, this is very familiar hardware.

It might be helpful to dismount a single hinge from the door so you can easily mount and dismount it from the fixed part on the doorframe without having to fiddle with the door itself, until you get a feel for it and then it'll be easier to know how to hold the door to align the mechanism.

One thing I notice about the brand Airstream uses is that the little release lever on the far end from the hinged part is too easy to accidentally snag and pull, which is what leads to the repeated disconnections. And of course I only knock one loose when I'm tired and inattentive and it's 10x more frustrating to put back together because of that.

My problem has been that some of them come apart because the screws come loose. They are little and very hard to find on the floor. Basically have to replace an entire hinge just because of one screw because hardware stores don't carry them. Dumb.

I will AS would stop using them, or at least someone could explain WHY they use them.

Problem solved. The end can be clipped after the zip tie is tight. When door is closed nothing is visible.

Go to woodworkerexpress.com and check out Tiomos Clip Protector, part# 1ZV639070301924596, their item # 11289919. These clips snap over the hinge release tab to eliminate it accidently releasing. 42 cents each. I just installed last week on every hinge on my AS. It only took a couple of minutes to do them all.
Thanks to a recent thread on this, which is where I picked up this information and solution.

I bought the little grey plastic clip things. They seem to mostly work, but I still have one or two that come apart, as noted above, because a screw comes loose. Pain in the keister.

Thanks for that, I think I'll order a bucketful. However, I think you posted the tracking # for your order rather than the part #, since 1ZV is a UPS tracking number prefix. It looks like the part number shown at WoodworkerExpress is F072135807540 and their SKU is 11289919

az-streamer - very simple solution, very nice, thank for sharing! (And a whole lot less cost-wise than the plastic Tiomos clips).

Plastic clip thingies look like a winner. BUT... on a slightly different tack, the drawer slide clips are even more inscrutable to reattach. Any primer advice for the clumsy Euro-challenged? Thnx for the thread hijack/diversion.

Airstream provided us with a baggie of these clips (for free) when we were at the factory in May. Maybe try calling the Airstream store.

Screws coming loose. Imo,biggger the prob. I usec tape at first then went with the zip ties. They don't release anymore but the srews docome lose. thinking of some !octite or =.

I was going to buy a doz or of the c!ips above, buy the shiping was more than the clips.

B

P.s. The reinstall trick is to focus on the very small round tabs on the base side, the cabinet slips over them and pivots to lock/click at the end

During a Q&A with Justin Humphreys (AS VP) and Rick March (General Manager Customer Relations Group) at the 2017 International Rally, I explained the problem with the European hinges. Rick said there are plastic clips that are sent with all models to the dealers and it's up to the dealers to put them on the hinges. Rick then passed around a sign up sheet for names/addresses for free plastic clips (which I did receive). I wonder if you called AS Service Dept if they'd send you some (?).

During my last annual inspection at the dealer, I did bring up the plastic clips and they had no idea of what I was talking about.
