Steps not staying up/working properly

I have a 1973 Airstream Ambassador 29ft, centre bath twin. It was built at the California plant.

My steps are not staying up or working as they should. They will drop a few inches and stay in that position. If I want to use the steps I have to pull them down by hand. The lever on the right hand side doesn’t seem to do anything.

The outriggers everything is attached to are sound and nothing moves there, so I believe it’s part of the mechanism??

Could anyone offer any help or advice please?

Thanks in advance,
Dean

Early on with my current trailer, I had a similar problem with my steps. At one point I thought my steps were bent. It worked that bad. We had other issues we needed to be fixed so I'm three hours from the factory so I took it in.

The service guys just hosed it down and then applied lots of silicon spray to the steps concentrating on all the joints and undercarriage mechanism. It all works just fine now. I revisit the lubrication of the steps two or three times a year to keep it functioning properly.

Dean,

Can you take a few pics and post them showing the problem? Include a pic showing the steps deployed and then go under and look into the step outriggers. The outriggers might need a repair.

Pictures should help with suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestion and sharing your own experience. I’ll give the lubrication a try!

I will this week when I next go there and post them. The outriggers look as they should but I’d be grateful for your opinion when you see the photos. Thank you!

From what I can see on looking at it closely today, it would help me if I cleaned the tracks where the steps slide, it need lubricating, the lever on the right hand side doesn’t work properly. The rollers don’t seem to correspond or work with the lever somehow?? That’s just my first thoughts anyway.

I couldn’t get a picture of them folded out, because I couldn’t get the steps down far enough to unfold them. The steps functioned the same when there was a subfloor and the outriggers seem very secure.
