Stainless steel upgrade parts
I want to replace the rusted water compartment in my '98 30' Excella 1000 with a stainless steel model. The Airstream store is 'out of stock' on these. Does anyone know of an alternate supplier?
Thanks

Same Problem
I have the same issue; steel utility box paint is gone and box is rusting. I didn't know Airstream had the part. So my plan was to remove the box and either remove the rust and re-paint or make a box from plastic or sheet aluminum. But would rather not. Please let me know if you find an alternate source. Thanks.

These SS parts originated at Roger Williams AS DFW Tx. No longer available.
AFAIK...the JC store is the sole source now.

Roger Williams still had the SS exhaust vent unless I bought the last one a few weeks ago.

You have to be careful with stainless steel parts on an aluminum trailer. Metal to metal contact will set up galvanic transfer. The aluminum becomes the sacrifical metal and just turns to powder. Stay will plastic or aluminum parts if posible.

Replaced all exterior fasteners along with the stainless door up-grades with no galvanic problems.
I believe they are close enough on the chart not to cause any problems. http://www.npfasteners.com/pdfs/galv...sion-chart.pdf
Plus Airstreams are or shouldn't be immersed.

Update!
Airstream had the SS compartment back in stock in late March and I was able to get it from them. Looks good - can't wait for our park to open and spring to arrive so I can install it. (That should be interesting, but our dealer, Can-Am in London, ON, Canada is always an excellent resource if I need help.)
Thanks for the replies.

Jim, I also bought one this winter from them. Did you install yours yet? Mine is installed and looks great, but I'm less than thrilled about the louvers clanking every time I close the door - curious if anyone has a fix to this.

This works best for us...helps flow when fan is on also, and yes I have forgotten to remove before getting on the road.

A thin layer of rubber as a gasket between the steel and aluminum should do the trick, if you have to put a stainless fitting on an aluminum trailer. Cork also works as a gasket material. So does sheet plastic such as visqueen. Even roofing felt will work.
Your fasteners should receive a thorough coating of dielectric grease before you screw them in, to maximize your protection against galvanic corrosion.

Good point's Pro...
I split a 1/4" ID section of clear plastic tubing as a seal against the AS.

I purchased a SS Fan Vent at my AS dealer yesterday. Un-wraped it today and was surprised to find a very warped flap. Also the little securing tab on the left is quite difficult to move.
Does any of this sound familiar. Can I expect better from an exchange?
Also, the SS heater door that I bought is without a securing tab for the vent (like the one on the original Atwood door). So the vent wanted to fall back into the compartment. Nothing that a bit of foil heat duct tape couldn't fix. The door also seems to be warped. Could be that a brazed-on hinge tube is slightly off.
Bottom line......not terribly impressed so far by the pricey SS upgrades.

I can't comment...got our's from Roger Williams. None of the SS vents have the lock tab, my clothespin can also hold it closed on a windy day.
If the dealer won't help, call AS & send a pic.

My dealer had another SS vent....same problem. Looks like I'll stick to the original for a while.

Well that's not good.
Could be they got warped when welded.

If anybody's interested, the Stainless Steel Compartments are back in stock, but the Airstream Internet Store has not been updated yet and still shows them out of stock. I ordered mine over the phone this morning. the stock white painted ones were rusting and starting to bother me, aesthetically.

Mine looks exactly like yours.
I was wondering if mine was defective, but I guess this is how they all are.

I got tired of hearing that damper bump in the wind while I was trying to sleep. I push a piece of foam I trimmed of a mattress topper up into the opening at night. That holds the damper down. When in storage or traveling I leave it there to keep the elements and insects out. I have driven thousands of miles with this little piece of foam. I can't believe in has not fallen out.
