Spare keys

Sorry for the Newbie question. But how do you go about making spare keys for the deadbolt and the outside storage compartments?

You would have to get blanks, here is a source (https://store.airstreamlife.com/coll...ntry-door-keys), and then go to a hardware store and have them cut new keys for you.

My local hardware store had acceptable blanks...unless you require an Airstream logo on the key itself.

I do the same thing.

I bought blanks and took them to a local hardware store. Big chain stores like Home Depot use automatic key cutting machines, and they can’t usually cut the Airstream blanks because they don’t have a program for it. An old school key cutter is necessary.

I like this idea. Weather/dirt isn't an issue?

Thanks for sharing!

I married my spare key custodian, the keys never get lost, but I forgot the combination.🥴

I got some additional blanks at this site, very reasonable and they had the Trimark key: https://www.rvshop.com/Keys-and-Locks_c_2106.html

But when I took them to a locksmith near Kissimmee, FL they had a sign that said they would not cut any key from a customer's blank. So I asked him to use his blanks (they didn't look the same) and he cut a set for me.... they didn't work. I wasn't about to pull up stakes and take my AS to his shop. So I went to the local Ace Hardware and they cut them for practically nothing. Lesson learned

I have very good luck with the guys from "Lost a Key". I needed a key blank for my door and needed a key for the fresh water inlet. They were most helpful (even give me a credit when I inadvertently ordered the wrong key).

Thank you for the feedback. I went to my local Ace and they did not have the blanks so I will order and have them cut it.

I prefer the out of sight out of mind. I put my spares in a magnetic key holder and it goes inside the battery box.

This just looks like an invitation for a set of cheap bolt cutters. And these locks are very easily picked.

I did have to get my blanks from AS and I took them to a locksmith outfit with the proper key cutting equipment and know-how. The kid at Home Depot, not so much.

My key lockbox is bolted to the arm inside the propane storage box with a key for every lock, just in case.

if it is well hidden and difficult to cut or decode, then it is worth it.

I travel with at least 2 sets of extra keys. I keep one set of AS keys in my tow vehicle and one set of extra tv keys in the AS.

I have this bolted to my trailer frame in an out of sight location. Inside are keys to the door and compartments...but not a complete set of all keys. A duplicate set of all keys are inside the trailer.

My truck was once stolen and my two sets of keys taken. It was a mess to have to have all rekeyed or replaced.
