Smoke Coming from Ducted Air

Where would I look first for a problem? I'm stumped and just caught it and shut it down.

Was it smoke like from a fire or more like a fog?

If smoke, did it have any type of particular smell to it?

Smoke? Or fog? Both look similar but smell different.

Fog isn't uncommon if the air in the trailer is humid and near the dew point.

In fact, a major function of air conditioning is to remove excess air via water condensing on the cold evaporator coils.

Certain smokes can be beneficial, even medicinal.

I guess I was hoping for something more specific - smoke from a wood/paper fire? smoke from an electrical fire? smoke from melting plastic? etc. Lots of diagnostic steps can be skipped if we know what was burning that resulted in the smoke being released.

If you don't know, then you might benefit from opening the intake vent where you can view into the underside of the a/c unit. Not sure exactly how to do that on your unit, so hopefully someone will chime in. At the basic level, you can pull your intake filters and use a flashlight to peer inside.

You're looking for signs of burned/discolored/melted plastic or wire insulation, or any other signs of overheating.

This would be my first step if you're sure that it was smoke resulting from something burning (or nearly burning.)

Angry

Found it! Typical quality factory work. Poor connection inside junction box shorting.

Will replace and clean up their messy crap.

Sounds fishy. A short would have tripped a breaker. If it didnt, don"t pat yourself on the back yet. You have bidder issues lurking.

bigger.

Unless you have an old style fuse box that has a penny inserted instead of a screw in fuse.

But a loose connection arcing wouldn't necessarily trip a breaker.

The electrical junction box in the AC does not penetrate into the air plenums. How would electrical smoke, acrid and easily identifiable, get into the air stream entering the trailer?

Actually, an arc would trip a breaker. Arc fault, as well as ground fault interruption is in breakers required to be installed in RVs

I don't know the specific a/c unit we're talking about here in this example, but on my trailer the junction box (and accompanying circuit board) is right smack in the middle of the return air plenum. It's not air tight and if there were smoke in the junction box it would certainly be sucked into the air flow.

Yep. Different configurations. Lets go back to the beginning. What wire was arcing? How was it fixed?

It's nearly impossible to diagnose a problem with minimal information. One can only guess or cite a probable cause.

A regular breaker won’t trip the arc will continue until the circuit overheats and fire results , and won’t trip until the circuit shorts .

Neither will a ground fault breaker trip .

Only an arc fault will trip at the first arc .

By the way if you have a old Hover or any brush type motor plugged into an arc fault circuit it will instantly trip the arc fault breaker when you turn it on .
